In a report today on espn.com The Yankees are reportedly interested in acquiring Vladimir Guerrero from the Expos.
Do you think they'll get him? I'm still looking for the exact link, when I do get it I will post it.

I've seemingly heard that rumor for years now...
From an article written by Peter Gammons yesterday: "The Yankees would love to talk about Vladimir Guerrero, but New York's front office doesn't think it could happen, or that the commissioner's office would ever allow it." I don't think they'll get him. |

Keep dreaming. Vlad isn't going anywhere.
In other news, the Yankees have expressed interest in signing Dennis Eckersley to set up for Rivera. |

If this happens, I will personally drive to Tusso's house and give him a big kiss.

Well, Gammons didn't exactly make it up, but he could have just as easily said, "The Angels would like to pick up Guerrero and Pujols for a couple of minor leaguers to be named later, but it's doubtful that such a deal would ever happen."
I'm sure the Yankees would love to get Vlad, but the chances of this happening are slim and none, and slim just left town.

It would just be typical if the Yankees got him, though in this case I don't think they will.

Any big name players who people think are going to leave their current teams are always rumored to be going to the Yankees. When in reality, they don't usually end up there (starting pitchers may be an exception). They tend to spend most of their money resigning their own players and on signing foreign players.
I laugh when I see that comment from Pedro Martinez about the Yankees trying to buy the whole league. When you compare the current rosters of the Yankees and the Red Sox.....who has really bought more of the league? Including foreign players, the Yankees have 9 players that they originally signed (Pettitte, Rivera, Soriano, Jeter, Hitchcock, Posada, Matsui, Williams, Johnson). The Red Sox, if I counted correctly, have a total of 2 (Nomar and Trot). Every other player on the Red Sox was acquired either through a trade or "bought" as a free agent. Yet, all Boston fans do is complain every time the Yankees make a deal for a player. How do they think their team was created?? The Yankees obviously spend the most money of everyone. However, they spend a lot of it trying to keep their original players with them as long as possible. Something many other teams don't do.....

People, if you want to complain about something, don't complain about Steinbrenner spending too much money. You can't spend too much money if you're committed to winning. It's not Steinbrenner's fault that MLB doesn't provide an even playing field. As long as the rules stay the way they are, Steinbrenner is not only allowed to, he has an obligation to spend as much as he can in order to make his team a winner. This is part of what comes with being a team owner: giving the team the money they need in order to compete. Don't complain about this. Complain about asshats like Pohlad who take the team's profits, and put more into their pockets than they give back to the team.

People do complain about cheap owners who nickel and dime their teams. But the reality of the situation is that not every team has the metro NY area to drawn on for fan support, merchandising, TV deals, etc. Its the best market in baseball and it gives the Yanks and Mets an inherent advantage over other teams. MLB really ought to stick another team in NY and we might start to see a little more parity.

If the Boss were to say "You know, the rules give me an advantage here, and I don't really think it's fair, so I'm not going to spend like I can," he would be failing in his obligation to his team. One can try to make MLB change the rules, but one just cannot attack Steinbrenner for spending what he can in order to turn his team into contenders.
