Upgraded to DirectX 9a and now the game hangs
I have been playing OOTP5 with no problems at all, then I upgraded from DirectX 8.x to 9a and now the game hangs after it brings up the window "Initiating sounds". You can hear the crowd, but then it hangs. If I wait long enough, the game screen comes up, but its basically hung. I can move around through the other screens in the game, but when it tries to go into the game play mode, it hangs.
I thought it might be my driver for my Annihilator 2, Nvidia GeForce2 GTS. So I just downloaded the most recent driver and still no luck. I'm using Windows XP on a 1.4MHz machine with 256MB of RAM. I tried disabling 3d in OOTP5 but that didn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill |

You may have to disable sounds "in-game", as you may or may not know adding sound to any program increases the chance of conflicts.

Is that the sound option in the graphics setup app or is that changed some where in the game itself?
Thanks, Bill |

Should be in the "game setup" and "disable" In-game sounds.

Steve,
That did it. I guess I should look into upgrading my sound card driver? Maybe its not compatible with directx 9. Thanks again, Bill |

I just checked. I have the current driver. Its a soundblaster PCI512. The last drive came out on 11/2001 and I have it.
Any idea how I can get the sound working again? Thanks for your help, Bill |

No clue, as I said adding sound to any program creates the possibility for numerous conflicts(personally, hate game sound and deleted the files when I got it...but that's just me). Not sure you will be able to get it running again as it is primarily an isolated issue, works on some systems and not others.

Wish I would have seen this first. I have a Compaq Presario 7478 that my son uses for OOTP. I had Windows 98SE when I first installed OOTP5. The sound worked fine. Then, when my son played several years into his career, the game slowed WAY down and the sound quit working. I have a small amount of computer knowledge but cannot find anyway to get the sound working again. In the past week, I have upgraded to XP added RAM (went from 128 to 312) and unfortunately added the SB PCI512 card (done the scandisk/defrag, disabled all background programs, etc). I have a 533 processer with a large hard drive (20 gig or so free). The sound card that came with the computer was junk (in my opinion) so I thought a SB card would probably work. I don't know of any reason that it shouldn't.
I hope OOTP ditches the sound altogether (even though i love it) if it won't work anymore reliably than this. There are way too many users who have trouble to say "just turn off the sound". This issue has been "swept under the rug" more than any issue I have ever seen with .400. I am a big fan of .400 and will probably buy anything they put out but this whole sound issue is very frustrating. |

I had the same problem when I upgraded to Direct X 9 on one of my computers. The sound card had the latest and greatest drivers but the game would hang unless I disabled sound. The final solution was to restore my computer to a previous date and to ultimately leave Direct X 9 off for now. Everything works like it did before and as it should.

Besides that, the sound issues are usually not with the game itself but rather with the operating system, Direct X or with the sound card. Most if not all of the sound problems that have come across these boards have been narrowed down to those very issues and not with the game itself. As described in my previous post I had run into sound problems on one of my computers and it was finally resolved by eliminating a Direct X conflict. This had nothing to do with the game itself and the other computer that I run the game on has had absolutely no problems with sound what so ever. To just get rid of the sound capabilities all together just because some users have problems is not a proper solution when the feature is an option and can be disabled accordingly. |
