what does hook mean?

"to hook" means to "pull a pitcher" or "replace a pitcher".

Managers, who take pitchers out very quickly when they are in difficulty, are described as "having a quick hook".

The manager's tendency to pull a starter....the faster the "hook", the quicker a manager will pull a starting pitcher who is giving up baserunners/runs.
