The Dodgers, Daryle, and Lowell
I’m not a very patient guy to begin with so believe me when I say my patience has run out waiting for the Dodgers to start hitting.
The game in San Francisco last night was a joke. First there is the issue of Darryle Ward. More on that later. Second, the balk call on Odalis Perez in the 6th was a joke. Tracy was ejected two steps out of the dugout before he even had a chance to ask what the ump what in the hell he was thinking. The whole thing set up the home run from Friggin’ Marquis Grissom. Come on, Grissom?? The Dodgers have now lost five straight in NoCal, each by ONE run. Dammmmit! If Shawn Green were just having an average year, this rant would be moot. If Beltre would live up to half the hype, we’d be fine. If the Dodgers brass would remove their head from their buttocks and trade for Lowell, we’d be fine!! Can you tell I’m melting down here?! Now for Daryle Ward…this guy is the biggest, most worthless piece of crap taking up a roster spot today. This oxygen thief is hitting .198. His biggest contribution to the team this season was when he went on the DL for 15 days and kept his incompetent ass off the field. Last night he dropped a grounder by Bonds that was hit right to him. RIGHT to him. The scorer ruled it a hit (“Charity begins at home”) so it would not hurt Bonds’ average (I guess because the ball was hit ‘hard’ ) Ward also struck out with the bases loaded and two outs, killing a chance for a big inning. That’s not all. Ward got a rare opportunity to run the base paths after getting a hit in the 9th inning. Ward forgot what he was doing (It’s understandable, the man has not been on base much this year) and took a foolishly wide turn rounding first base. The Giants said “Wow, bless our luck!” and nailed him. Ward is fat and clearly has little talent. He does not belong on a major league diamond. The Dodgers have a backup catcher named Ross hitting .300. While McGriff is on the DL, put Lo Duca at first base and Ross behind the plate. Or Mike Kincaid at first. He’s hitting 60 points better than Ward and doesn’t embarrass you on the field. It’s time to quit screwing around and get into serious game mode.

btw, Ward was considered a fairly decent hitter coming into this year, except against lefties. On the subject of the balk, you can't find a more textbook definition than what Perez did- he didn't step of the rubber- ergo balk. Hell the entire BBTN crew (Gammons, Reynolds, Valentine) all agreed that it was a balk.

"Daryle Ward is lucky he's in ****ing baseball!"My brother is coming home from North Carolina to make a pilgrimage to Busch to catch the Cards / Dodgers matchup in early July. I was stoked as it will be the first time in a long time I'll get to see a real baseball team [Last three times there saw the Buccos, D'Backs and D'Backs again] play the Cards...but it is no good if the Bums don't get their act together. Then again, LL, just wait...the Dodgers will start hitting when they get a whiff of Brett Tomko or the Cardinals bullpen.

As for Lowell- pray why on earth would the Marlins trade him now, before the all-star break ? Its been made clear they "think" they're still in it (though these are the same people who thought Torborg could manage) but also that they want Lowell representing them in the all-star game- there won't be a Jeff Shaw here. Secondly, why would they trade him to the Dodgers, who have a farm system with one or two decent arms at best, when the Cubs have riches galore ? The dodgers could offer everything they have short of Loney (Hanarahan, Ching Fen, Thurston, and Jackson) and the Cubs could outbid them without Guzman (Cruz, Zambrano, Kelton). Good luck hoping to get Kelton- Robbie Alomar might be a better acquisiton, and would be a Bonds'esque improvement on that sink hole at 2nd (Alex Cora).

I watched that Ward goof last night, and as Vin Scully told it like it was, I knew I'd be hearing from LL on that one..... what a horrible play that was.

Ward is underrated. A real leader and I'm glad he's playing for the Dodgers/

![]() That's about as critical as you'll hear him get. Maybe it was a balk but it was not clear cut, despite what the ESPN boys say. For them to toss Tracy like they did was horsebleep. All he asked for was the ruling. Tracy didn't even get a chance to bring the umps' mother into the conversation before he was given the heave-ho. As for Daryle (Christ! who spells it like that?) Ward, at this point I'd rather have his dad, Gary, on the Dodgers roster. Prof, I hope the Dodgers pummel the Cards! Maybe even 4 runs in one game!

First, you underestimate the Dodgers farm. La has made great strides in the last few drafts and according to Baseball America, they've had some of the best drafts in the last couple seasons. Yes, their best prospects are still a few years away. Second, who says the Cubs are that interested? I doubt the Cubs are going to one up LA just for the sake of saying they could. No way, IMO, the Cubs will overpay for Lowell in terms of prospects. The biggest obstacle facing LA's acquisition is the fact that Lowell can't be a free agent until after next season. Florida can hang on to him, make a run this year pay him arbitration, and trade him before next year's deadline.

LL, the ProspectReport ( a highly respected sight) ranks the bums as 19th, with the tag "A plethora of high potential teenage talent that could pay off large dividends - or none at all." Peter Gammons and the Chicago papers have made it clear that the interest from the Cubs is high- far more, some would argue, than the dodgers. You cannot seriously argue that the Dodgers farm is better than that of the Cubs (forgetting the Giants, who are better than both)- if not, my point is simply that the Cubs have less risky prospects to offer, and have more to offer than the Dodgers do, which combined with their strong interest, leads me to believe that Lowell is heading to Chicago unless Los Angeles mortgages the farm for him.

As a Dodger fan for 50 years, it kills me to watch this team. I cant begin to summon the faith that LA can pull off the acquisition of a singular talent like Lowell, particularly in light of their sad recent history with player evaluation ( the aforementioned Ward, and Chubby Coomer, and Andy Ashby, et al ). The Cubs would seem a better fit for Lowell, particularly if he wants to continue enjoying the recognition as a serious power hitter. Heaven knows that Dodger Stadium is less hitter-friendly than Wrigley. Im depressed, altho we do have Nomo going tonight, so there is hope we can avoid the sweep.

When Ward was coming up with the Astros he was one of the most coveted young hitting prospects in the game. There was little room for him, however, in a lineup that already had Bagwell at first and Berkman (before he moved to center) and Hidalgo (before he went bust) expected to be the team's corner outfielders. But when Ward finally got a chance to play regularly he didn't hit. Dodgers still took a flier on him. Oh well.

Dodgers have one of the better records in baseball and are only 1 game back of the Giants. We have also outsocred the Giants in SF despite losing 5 of 6, so calm down.
The call of a balk was correct although Tracy was tossed way too soon unless the few words he did get out before getting tossed were F*CK YOU AND YOUR MOMMA, highly doubtful. What I really want is for Green to play like he did last year and Beltre to be solid. If that happens we will be more than fine. Of course, that is one big IF. |

Tho' I'm not a Dodgers fan, I kind of enjoy watching them. I'm a pretty big fan of pitching and the Brooklynites have that in spades. And they make for an interesting match-up against my team (the lumber wielding, arm&glove-less Reds).
Ward is a joke - I bet he even wishes he was pine riding now. Fourth OF's are kinda like the back-up QB - everybody loves 'em till they play everyday. Ward was better off being the fourth OF in Hou where he was under very little pressure. As a starter, he's folded like a camp chair. |

Update: Nomo was just eeevvillll, Dodgers win 6-0, Beltre hits HR off poor D. Moss ( uh, how is Russ Ortiz doing in Hotlanta? ), Green hits double and makes spectacular catch with glove in "wrong" position, team has more hits in this game than in prior WEEK... life is good.
