Train kept a rollin' ... until the wheels fell off
Managing a game last night and started Jesse Foppert, a rookie who I brought up in midseason. He'd been a pleasant surprise, going 6-3 with an era just over 4 coming into this game. He's also been impressive with the K's, striking out 96 in 92 innings before last night. His start last night, brief though it was, combined extremes in pitching, from an amazing start to an agonizing finish.
1st inning, 3 up, 11 pitches, 3 K's 2nd inning, 3 up, 3 K's 3rd inning, 3 up, 3 K's Jesse had struck out 9 in a row. No baserunners. His amazing start had me wondering what he might reach before the night was over. Turns out I was a tad premature. 4th inning and it's like a different pitcher came out. 1st batter, BB. 2nd batter, BB 3rd batter, BB. 4th batter, K - that's more like it, 10K's in 10 outs. 5th batter, SAC fly, scoring 1. Ouch, still got that no hitter though. 6th batter, BB 7th batter, Grand Slam - Ugh! Down 5-0 after that start. 8th batter, BB (At this point, I wanted to take him out, but I was curious to see what would happen, and since I was hopelessly out of playoff contention at this point in September, I left him out there to see if he could salvage anything from this train wreck) 9th batter, BB 10th batter, BB, loading the bases again 11th batter, single, scoring two. 12th batter, mercifully a groundout. 4th inning, 7 runs on 2 hits with 7 walks. 6 runs coming with 2 outs. That after striking every batter faced through 3 innings. He did strike out the first batter in the 5th before showing as tired. I replaced him and went on to lose 14-1. Anybody else have a promising start come apart at the seams like that? |

Either that, or the hitters figured out his pitches really quick, and stopped chasing the bad ones.
Still, that is a rather incredible number of walks... |
