RIng Magazines
No idea what triggered it, but I just had a flashback to the late 70s when I last visited the offices of The Ring Magazine in New York. They had a storeroom with racks of back issues of the magazine and fight posters and some other stuff piled up in a jumble. I picked through the magazines and pulled out a half dozen and a crumpled poster of the Chuvalo-Patterson fight.
I think I paid about ten bucks for the lot. Also shook hands with Herb Goldman, the Ring Magazine's resident historian. (I also recall they had this incredibly good-looking girl/young woman in reception. I think she was a relative of someone else working there.) ![]() I wonder what happened to all those back issues? During the pandemic I was working from home, my wife was stranded overseas, and I was desperate for something to look forward to. So I ordered some back issues of The Ring. I was happy to get them, but really disappointed at how much they charged. I thought that since they just had the magazines sitting around in a warehouse, the price could have been more reasonable.

Riung Magazine Ownership Timeline
Interesting
Ownership Timeline: 1922–1970s: The Nat Fleischer Era Founded by Nat Fleischer, the magazine was family-owned and operated for decades, cementing its reputation as "The Bible of Boxing". Late 1970s–1980s: Transition Period Ownership shifted to a group including former New York Knicks star Dave DeBusschere and Nick Kladis. Bert Randolph Sugar took over for a period starting in 1979. 1990–2002: Stanley Weston After a near-bankruptcy in 1989, the magazine was purchased in 1990 by Stanley Weston, who operated it through London Publishing Corp and later regained its stability. 2002–2007: Kappa Publishing Group The magazine was owned and published by Pennsylvania-based Kappa Publishing Group, which also produced sister publications KO Magazine and World Boxing. 2007–2024: Golden Boy Enterprises (Oscar De La Hoya) In September 2007, Sports and Entertainment Publications LLC, a subsidiary of Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Enterprises, bought The Ring. During this period, it moved to Los Angeles (2011) and shifted to a heavily digital focus. 2024–Present: Turki Alalshikh In November 2024, Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Alalshikh acquired The Ring for million, with plans to return to print in 2025. |
