The way to play OOTP
Potential ratings: 5 stars
Current, Overall ratings: none Ballplayer value always contains reputation/buzz/hype/educated opinion. Those who play stats-only (not sure what that is but sounds like all ratings are off) are playing a database game, not a baseball manager game. With current ratings off and potential ratings on but at their most general level THEN the stats become important because THEN I need to figure out how well the player is performing up to his potential (and how good my scouting is). So playing stats-only may seem like requires the most accuracy but it is actually creating its own distortions. As I said, stats-only is a database game, not a baseball management game. Carry on. If only The Wolf could see this thread.
The Forum war that would result from him doing so would be epic.

The way to play OOTP is what ever one's own way is.

Potential continues to be distorted because it is only up to age 29. So depending on when you important the game all the players who have peaks later are meaningless (depending on the style of play) |

Since performances act independently statitics cannot tell you what will likely happen next.

I personally like that the game generates quasi-random results:
- plays are unique events and do not reflect the play preceeding nor proceeding - individual stats are required to add up to the seasonal league-wide aggregates - player ratings reflect who will likely get what portion of that aggregate pie Yet, typically, advice is asked for on these forums about how to manage this and that without any investigation into how the game is set up and operates which can sometimes be non-intuitive. Which is at best lucky advice. Not always, but often enough. Yet we can't get too deep into engine room discussions without it turning into grounds for divorce. And so we beat on, like boats against the....etc. |

Scouting grades use a 20-80 scale so I use that.

The great thing about this game is that there isn't a "right" way to play just a preferred way. I do enjoy playing stats only. For me it is how I get most enjoyment out of the game. I do find it funny though when people make this argument that playing with ratings is the most accurate experience. Yes scouts absolutely use a scouting grade of 20-80 to guess at future performance. Those grades go away once a player becomes a major leaguer though. Stats and analytics rule the day. Yet, in OOTP the ratings stay even though it is not true to life. At all. However, who cares? If that is how a person finds enjoyment in the game so be it. Isn't the whole idea of this forum to allow people who appreciate the game to come together and nerd out? Maybe even learn some things about the game they didn't know about before?

I can't imagine getting a useful, serious answer to the question -- why do you apparently feel the need to tell people they can do whatever they want with the game? But it's yet Monday so who knows.
And how come the forum moms don't chime in with their PSA when people discuss teams? Bobby: "New York will win!" Johnny: "I like Boston!" Forum moms: "Now everybody, it's ok to cheer for whoever is your favorite. That's what makes baseball great." Or, let's choose another example: Fredo: "Las Vegas is better than San Diego!" Mikey: "I like tuna!" Forum moms: "Now everybody, both Fredo and Mikey are both right! It's ok to like whoever you want, because that's what makes everything so great." |
