Error Message Reads: "Unable to setup 3D stadium and player models"
I keep getting this error after an issue arose while playing a game and then backing out midway to do the draft.
I've reinstalled the game via the latest patch and it doesn't remedy anything. I started a test league and it was fine, so it's only happening in my preferred league. |

Same. I also got the same error after the draft, but I suspect the draft may be a red herring, because I had to reload a backup from right before the draft.

If you hit finish day, does this go away or is it still an issue?
I think we might need to see some league files here, if you can either ftp them to us or upload to Dropbox/Google Drive and post a link, we can take a look.

Are you using custom stadiums, or have modded parks downloaded?
If you can include all the trace files from the debug directory, that could help us track down what's going on here too. |

"Finish day" does nothing, and I am an expansion team in an MLB league. I have never touched my own stadium except to change capacity.
Trace files attached below. Last edited by bwburke94; 06-02-2025 at 06:23 PM. |

To clarify, the error does not happen at pre-existing stadiums, only my own (and presumably the other expansion teams').

If you go to the construction kit, does that fail? Or if you go to the park page for the team, what do you get when you go to the 3d model page?
When you expand, it should set a random park, and the game will create a construction kit park to use in there. If things work in those spots, they should work in-game. The possible problems I could see: First, if your game was imported from ootp25, then you may need to copy over the construction kit park manually to use. You can follow the instructions from Jorin in this thread: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...08#post5182408 Second, if they fail to load in the park page or the construction kit page, you may need to verify your local files and make sure your data folder is pointing to the correct location. It's possible there's a disconnect between what the game is looking for. Otherwise, I think it would be helpful to grab screenshots of the park page, which lists the paths and some of the 3d model information, and we can see from that what is happening. |

Construction kit fails. Screenshot attached below.
I have verified that this was backup restoration which caused the issue, not the draft itself (unless it's related to importing the draft order on draft day, which I did in the original run and could not do in the retest). I reloaded to an old save which was mid-draft, ran the draft again, and 3D still worked the next day. I had not edited the draft order in that old save. EDIT: It's also worth noting that I am using the standalone release installed into a non-default folder; it's entirely plausible that everyone getting this bug is using single-folder installation, because the bug is related to files not being installed in the proper place. If your files are in a non-standard location, you may need to double check your paths. If you go to the Database tab in the settings, on the right hand side, it lists a path for the ballparks and models. You should make sure that actually maps to the location that you have your install - since you mention this is from a backup, it seems likely that somehow the path is wrong and not pointing to where your files are actually installed to.

It says it uses the paths [my install location]\data\ballparks and [my install location]\data\ballparks\models, and those folders do exist.
Because the error has persisted across multiple patches, and only happens on the specific file I restored from a backup, it's possible my install location is the problem. I'll run a few tests to see if that's it. |

Switching the install location didn't fix it. It used the paths [my new install location]\data\ballparks and [my new install location]\data\ballparks\models and gave the exact same error.
In both installs, real ballparks load their 3D model fine, but created ballparks fail to load 3D models, and the construction kit doesn't work for either. I ended up resetting the broken parks to the default model just to make the game playable again. |

Bumping this as I'm running into it, as it seems like many are.
I'm playing a Historical League starting in 1970. I typically play most games (80%+) in the following fashion: 1. To 6th Inning 2. "At Bat" or "Until RISP" after that, depending on how close the game is I like the current 3D, which is much improved from the last version I played (OOTP19). But the 3D gets the 'Unable to set up the 3D stadium and player models' glitch about a week into 1972. Hadn't run into it at all in over 300 "games" played up to that point. It was short enough into the season to just pull the Preseason Backup into it. But it ran into the problem again a week in. If there's an easy, not very technical fix to this, perhaps it should be pinned. I think I see at least 3 threads on the issue, though none of them really give a clear answer on what to do. Thanks! |

If it happened at the same point both times, the same stadium is probably at fault. 1972 means it's probably Arlington Stadium.

Neither were issues when I played countless games in those stadiums in 1970 (Riverfront) and 1971 (both). It's kind of clear from the various threads that Customers are running into this error message in a Lot of different settings. Pure historical League, with no modding. |

Deleted League.
Restored the 1971 EOS Backup. Played the first two series of the year, which were at home. No issues. Went on the first road trip of the season. Got the error message playing the road opener against the Reds at Riverfront. I'll try tommorow to uninstall the whole game, reinstall it, and see if the 1971 EOS Backup can be restored without this issue borking up. If not, it's time to request a refund from Steam. At that point it's beyond being worth the hours put into the first 2 seasons only to have it be unplayable in the 3rd season. :-( |

Uninstalled the game. Reinstalled it. Pulled by 1971 EOS Backup into it.
Played the first two series of the year, which were at home. No issues. Went on the first road trip of the season. Got the error message playing the road opener against the Reds at Riverfront yet again. Difficult to express the frustration of investing hours into two seasons to have the game go boom. In 20+ years of playing the game, never have experienced something like this. |

So once again, the problem may come from the fact backups were involved.

These are the Stadiums in the backup folder:
astrodome_1971-1991 atlanta_fulton_county_stadium_1966-1973 candlestick_park_1970-1978 metropolitan_stadium_1965-1976 riverfront_stadium_1970-1983 san_diego_stadium_1969-1980 shea_stadium_1964-1978 three_rivers_stadium_1970-1974 veterans_stadium_1971-1984 So this would mean they are all borked? That's 8 of the 12 NL Stadiums, along with 1 AL stadium who I must have played against in the 1971 World Series. I should do... what? It seemed like the "Path" discussion you had earlier didn't fix it. It truly renders that game unplayable in a 3D fashion, with the 2D being awful. And seriously... never ran into this in OOTP19 playing the game in the exact same fashion as I do now, and making regular EOS back ups that on occasion needed to be restored. My last OOTP19 Historical Replay was all of 1970-87, literally game-by-game 6th-9th Inning... over 3000 games. Is there no easy fix to deal with this? Your initial post in the thread was in May, and doesn't appear to have been resolved cleanly. |
