Understanding new ratings and resulting stats
Hi all,
I'm finally digging into v25 after some time away and feeling a bit overwhelmed with the changes in how ratings are calculated. I'd love some advice. Specifically, I like to play a Hall of Fame League with HOF-elected players only. I will import a player based on a peak season, then adjust the ratings in the player editor to match a typical 5- to 7-year peak. Looking at them after importing to the new version, the stats are different. Take Ty Cobb, for example. I don't have the exact figures from v24, but I'd have entered a typical peak season, something like: 550AB, 215H, 35 2B, 15 3B, 25 HR, 60BB, 40K, .391/.451/.645 (I like to boost power somewhat for dead-ball hitters) Resulting stats in v25 show: 550AB, 184H, 41 2B, 13 3B, 16HR, 53BB, 84K, .335/.399/.544 Pretty big difference. Is the adjustment for league level, era neutralizing, what? Also, you have: Expected current (Hall of Fame League): 32 2B, 23 3B, 19HR, 55BB, 51K, .345/.412/.598 Expected talent: 31 2B, 22 3B, 8HR, 48BB, 64K, .326/.384/.516 What's the difference between these? I have my league stats adjusted to a hitter/pitcher balance that I like. I assume one of these indicates expected stats in that league. The first one? Lastly, I'm curious how to go about entering new HOF players in v25. When Ichiro gets in, how should I enter his peak ratings to assume he's fairly represented. I've always simply checked the stats in the ratings editor, but if that doesn't work, the new guys could be unfairly overrated/underrated. Thanks for any help on how these are shown. |

The "Expected current (Hall of Fame League)" line is an adjustment based on your League Totals. So, it is basically making an adjustment from the "modern Major League environment" to the one being represented by your League Totals.
The "Expected Talent" is doing the same thing, but using the Potential ratings instead of the Current ratings you have for the plater. There is some text that precedes those lines (which could be formatted better to show what it is referring to). "The following stat lines will show the player's expected results given the league totals. League Modifiers, or other league balance issues may alter their actual output". So, basically, that is saying if you have Modifiers set to something other than 1.000 and/or if your talent levels are higher/lower (you can see talent levels based on the "Lg Avg" column, they are typically a little over 400) that will also change how they would be expected to perform. I can't really give specific advice on how to handle your players going forward since you have been editing ratings. It is hard to say where your balance currently is (although your Lg Avg numbers will give some context there). I would recommend some testing. |

Since your league has all HOF players, the competition is better than the ones they played against in IRL. So you should expect deviations for most if not all players.

Thanks for the replies. What's still confusing me is why the "neutral, modern Major League environment" stats changed so much when transferring versions. If I understand right, they should show a typical result against ordinary MLB opponents, not HOF-level. Therefore, the stats should look typical there no matter the league quality. But there are still fairly huge differences. Clemente's BB's and K's have gone from about 30/80 to 11/106. Things like that.
This brings up another idea. If I were to re-do the ratings to make typical stats like before, and kept league stats locked, wouldn't that result in similar performances in league play to what went on in v24? I'd rather not go through all this, but I feel like I'd rather have something concrete where the new figures are more abstract. By the way, LgAvg Batting ratings for the league are: 408 BABIP, 414 Avoid K's, 414 Contact, 418 Gap, 408 Power, 406 Eye. Does this seem low? Based on a normal MLB being slightly over 400 ratings, it seems like it to me. |

Bear in mind that ""neutral, modern Major League environment" is base on the 2010 season.
League totals for 2024 have changed just a bit since then so it'll never be a close match. Auto Cal modifiers are your only solution. I run a league with even more inflated talent and this is the only way to bring player totals in line. Even then it's always a battle to get the totals right. Even more so if Pitcher Stamina is above normal |

I did some digging and see that very similar problems have come up before (https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=353400), and yes, the easiest solution will probably be re-calculating based on the real-life stats I used in v24. I'm pretty bummed at this not because I have a million players (it's only 12 teams), but because I had painstakingly adjusted L/R splits on the old version and there's no easy button to auto-calc those like the others. I'll need to start that over. Since I made the import mid-season, I'll be finishing the campaign on v24 first. What a pain when I'd rather just jump in and play it with the new version.

They did make a doc on Import from 24 considerations that recommended not doing so mid-season.
