Advice
Looking for hints/tips from experienced PT players.
I'm a long time player of OOTP, which I love, but never tried PT until this June...now I don't play anything else. Love it!!!! I started off really stupid, was wanting to build out a full Mariner's squad of my favorite past/current players. I bought Griffey Perfect 100 for like 257K sometime back in July/August, you're welcome whoever you are! But now, I seem to be capped at Gold Level. Made it to Diamond twice and was promptly demoted the next week. There are a ton of Tournament Reward Cards that I believe would help my roster or help me finish more missions, but I can't seem to win ANY tournaments with any consistency except Quick Live Card 6 packs and the Historical Diamond Card Reward Tournaments. Daily and Weekly Perfect Drafts, I rarely make it past round 2. I won once out of somewhere around roughly 1000 tournaments playing for Diamond or Perfect Tournament Reward Cards, I suspect that was luck, but I'm usually not lucky. My 3 Perfect Card pulls out of over 10,000 packs tells you how my luck rolls. One of which was a Live Perfect that eventually turned into a Gold card a month or so later. I think I've also learned that PP is better spent on buying cards to complete missions rather than buying packs...but I'm not 100% convinced I know what I'm talking about. Looking for any hints/tips that experienced players might be willing to share on how to improve Perfect Draft performance or how to more effectively/efficiently build my roster to maybe be competitive at the Diamond Level. I can only dream of making it to Perfect...hahaha. For Daily/Weekly Traditional Tournaments, I have started focusing on Live Only since I have almost every Live Card and very few good and boosted Combinators. I don't know how to get screen shots onto a thread, my Team is Seattle Stealth and I'm currently in Gold325 League and I'm BusterGrey in game as well...don't know if that helps. Please feel free to tell me I'm an idiot, no pride here, I just want to be competitive, and I know I'm not the smartest guy in the room! EB (BusterGrey) |

Tip #1 is never buy card packs. Get your packs from mission completions, tournament rewards, and Twitch drops.Occasional exception to this is Spotlight packs, which are sometimes worthwhile; but you have to study the odds of pulling those brand new cards that will sell for big bucks or complete new missions for meta cards.
Tip #2 is something you've already found out, which is that card usefulness deteriorates over time. Perfect Junior was a solid league card a few months ago, but it's now a bench warmer. So...skip on older mission trees where the big topper is no longer a meta card. Spend on the newer ones like PT Elite, where the Diamond cards are better than launch-day Perfects. Also, try to avoid locking Perfect toppers so that you can sell them later if they're not contributing and you need game cash. You seem to have a good grasp on tournaments. It's either live quicks and dailies or spending some serious game cash on Combinators. The big problem with live tournies is that you'll get clobbered when you get to PTCS by teams with Combinators, and PTCS rewards are generally the best cards available. If you do go the Combinator route, you'll need to identify the best cards to build around. One way to do that is to join some non-Combinator-capped tournaments, take your lumps, and then look over the winners' rosters. That will get you a good idea of which Combinators are worth the investment. There are also a few Twitch streamers who go over the hot new tournament cards once a week or so, and there are a few people on Discord who have spreadsheet data on the best-performing cards. Roster construction 101 is that pitching and defense are more important than they might seem. Aim for pitchers who are over 140 Stuff (right now...who knows about next month) and can keep the ball in the park. Control is also important, but you should be OK as long as they are above 110 or so. Reject anyone who's under 100, because at this point they'll be walking more than a batter an inning. Help them out with top-notch defense at second base, shortstop, and center field. The one defensive position that's almost completely unimportant is first base, as the spread on Zone rating is only 6-8 runs over the course of a full season. For batters, it's power and eye...as long as Avoid K and Contact/BABIP are not too low. You could also list your Gold level roster here as well, since only those of us in Gold .325 will be able to look that over (AFAIK). |

A couple of tips
Zack Wheeler gets killed by LHB's. Almost any of the starters you are using in relief are much better.
Cano needs to go, there are many 2B at this point who are upgrades. You need some lefties in the pen. Your offense needs more contact. All in all, a plus .500 team in Gold in only 25 weeks is an accomplishment. There are only about 4% of teams right now in higher leagues, and I think less than 10% in gold leagues. So you're in the 90th percentile. Keep it up and use what you learn next year. |

Great advice! Thank you! I'll make those recommended changes, but this is my current Gold Roster:
Starters: Bumgarner 102 Blue 102 Prior 102 Rogan 102 Wheeler 102 Bullpen: Clase 103 Jax 103 Iglesias 102 Lincecum 98 Miller 99 Greene 100 Martinez 101 Senga 101 Starting Lineup: Gunnar 102 3B Tatis Jr 102 RF Soto 103 Judge 100 CF Adames 102 SS Rogan 102 DH Harper 101 1B Cano 100 2B Raleigh 97 C Bench: Suzuki 99 Doyle 99 X Edward's 96 Helton 101 Posey 88 I chose Raleigh for his D. I figured out D at C, SS, 2B and CF were as important as batting ratings. I have Posey on Bench due to Chemistry benefit to the team, same with Xavier...plus he's a versatile sub on the depth charts. Shoot, most of my Bench and Bullpen I try to think of Chemistry benefit as well as baseline ratings. Blue, Prior and Rogan are killing my chemistry, but nothing I have comes close to their baseline ratings. Any hints/tips on how to improve Perfect Draft Toyrnament performance? I feel like I should be doing better just by pure random chance than I am with my draft choices. Thanks again. EB |

Posting a screenshot is easy. When replying to a post look just above for the paperclip. Make a screenshot of your team and put it on the desktop (so it is easy to find). Clicking on the paperclip, then click on choose file, which should be on the desktop and click upload.
This is my alternate which rarely plays tournaments. It's earned roughly 2600 packs from logging in, twitch drops, and a few tournaments. Twitch tells me 80% of those packs were from twitch drops. Plus, whatever packs I got from missions. Last week, the team was 1 of 6 in the diamond league that did not make the playoffs nor get relegated. Players with the red mark were obtained from missions. I bought Babe Ruth because the mission was outrageously expensive. You can see that most of the cards are 102+ and is not really good enough to hang in diamond long-term. I would like to replace Harper, Glasscock, and Bautista in the near future, but I only have 320K to spend. |

OK...
So I pulled Wheeler off of starting lineup and put him in the pen, Hunter Greene now my 5th starter. Cano put to Reserve squad and replaced with Gehrenger. I don't really have quality lefties for the pen...I have Snell 99 but his control is only 93, B. Wager 97 (135/108/115), T. McGraw 91 Combinator (135/117/89), W. Hernandez 99 (127/110/100), Paxton 99 but movement only 98, Streeter 100 (113/102/139)...it only gets worse from there. I've used each of them for multiple seasons, but once I got to Gold, they all got torched. Looking to complete PT Elite Tex which will get me Yordan Alvarez 103 to be my new DH. Then it's a long road to LAD completion to finish out PT Missions. I'll look to see if there's a mission that gets me a Leftie for the Bullpen that won't get lit up like a Christmas Tree. Thanks again guys!!!! Always open to learn more for anyone who wants to share!!!! EB Last edited by BusterGrey; 12-24-2024 at 11:41 AM. Reason: English language fail on my part |
