Global League, Real Life Players

I'm beginning a project with leagues all over the world, sort of a "what if baseball became the global game" deal. It will have a World Cup, etc. What I'd love to be able to do is start it in the late 1800s with real players, but have those real players debut in their home leagues - so when Roberto Clemente debuts, for example, he does so in a Caribbean league, or when Fernando Valenzuela debuts he does so in the Mexican League, etc. Is this remotely possible? I'm perfectly happy just creating a fully fictional version of this but I'd love to see if I could have real-life players alongside fictional in a broad, global universe. Any pointers welcome!
