Using Pre 1871 Teams/Players? Need help!

Hi! I know that Historically you can only start in 1871, but for those of you that created leagues before then (like say 1857 or in the 1860s) how did you create the team and players to make it as realistic as possible?

For example: Guys like Doc Adams, Frank Pidgeon, Jim Creighton? These guys were stars in the 1850s but because they played before 1871 how did you create them (as realistic as possible) being that they don't have baseball reference pages if that makes sense? Same goes for teams like the New York Knickerbockers, New York Gotham, or the Brooklyn Atlantics (when they were awesome in the late 50s or early 60s) how did you create their players with no baseball reference pages to help?

I want to create (even though I know it's not going to be completely realistic) leagues before 1871 but I just don't understand how to create a player to match those players if that makes sense?
