How many teams for each pro/rel level?
Kicking the tires on another USBL project, as well as using some of the great work I'm finding on the graphics subforum.
In the structure I envision, I will have two leagues. One older league consisting of 24 teams will enter into a promotion/relegation agreement with the upstart newer league consisting of 32 teams. I'm trying to decide what a reasonable outcome would be in this fictional legal process. Obviously I could split the leagues by their original sizes and have two flights of 24 and 32 teams. That makes sense, as the newer league would probably be happy being able to be promoted at all. I've thought about promoting the best four teams from the lower division and making it 28/28. Finally, I've thought about splitting into three levels with 16/20/20, but the more I think about it, I don't want to do that. What would make sense, realistically, in this situation? Do eight teams from the lower division fold and it becomes 24/24? I don't know. Help me out. |

All of those options make sense except for folding eight teams.

The structure itself is really personal preference and what makes sense for the group of organizations you have.
I'm not sure you asked this, but the key to a healthy pro-reg system IMO is what percentage of teams are moving around. I go with somewhere in the range 10-15% range of teams moving in each direction (i.e. 70-80% of the league stays put, 10-15% get relegated and 10-15% get promoted). |

Another option: 16 teams is your top tier, and the two 20 team leagues are both 2nd tier regionalized.

I've always liked 28 teams because the schedule can be perfectly balanced. 1 3-game home series and 1 3-game road series against every team for 162 total games

Yeah, you're right. Right now I'm thinking about just not letting that second league get to 32 teams and keeping it at 24 and 24. For anyone familiar with the CIBL concepts on here from Sportslogos.com, it was already a 40 team league that I cut down to 32.
The eight that I cut were duplicate cities at odds with the older league, Daniel Saline's USBL. I think I'm going to make the decision to cut an additional eight of the 32 CIBL concepts that I just don't really like. I do enjoy the idea of 16 teams at the top and then two 20-team, regionalized second tier leagues, but 16 top flight teams would be a bit too small for me. As for the pro/rel rate, I think four teams going up and down is good for me. That's about 16%, which is a bit higher than the Premier League's ratio. I'm still workshopping this concept and editing a fairly comprehensive spreadsheet. If you guys want to download my initial USBL concepts, they're on my profile. OOTP 24's version came out better than 25, to be honest. |
