Adjusting Ice Time In 2D Games

I'm playing my playoff games in 2D mode.

My team lost the first game (on the road) and went down 2 goals early in the second game. Searching for a win and desperate to get some life out of my team I went into the "Lines" menu at the start of the 3rd period and adjusted the time on ice for the lines to only have my top three lines have playing time and zeroing my 4th line.

We came back from two goals down to tie it up and force overtime. At first I thought this was my tactical brilliance until I noticed the players on the fourth lines were still playing.

I'm inclined to think this isn't a bug but just me not understanding a mechanism of the game. Would it be better to just take the guys off the fourth line completely in the Lines menu? Can you adjust ice time in game?

I think stamina is a factor when lines change on the fly. That's why I try and get my fourth line more minutes earlier on, so I can lean on my top lines late.
