Post Another question for my hero, Tiger Fan

I'm curious about your method for re-creating player's history and stats. I found a previous thread where you recover past players stats and generate a report. I've been able to figure that out. What I'm curious about is: How do you capture all those little details (injuries, who they were traded for) and record them so you can post them in a report 5-80 seasons later? Short of backing up each season, I'm not sure how. Of course, I'm still new at this game...

I had limited HD space on my old cpu so what I did was save the following htm pages every season:
Lnews.htm,Ltrans.htm, Linj.htm By saving those three pages I have a record of every trade, special achievement and injury to occur each season. Also, at the end of each season I save the boxscore txt files for the playoffs, allstar game and special events like no-hitters or record breaking games. I renamed the files by adding the proper year to the beginning and zipped them all up so I have an enitre history of my league in an 8-10 mb file.

I was also uploading all the league reports (excluding player pages) to a website with my old cpu. Now that I have the new system I have them all downloaded back to my hard drive.

I only wish I came up with this plan in 1901 and not in 1939 so I have very little pre-1939 history on my league. However, the player page trick that I stumbled upon solves most of those concerns.

The other holes in my league history are from 1962-69 when my old cpu lacked the memory to create the htm reports and from 1974-78 which were corrupted when I transferred the floppies from my old system to the new one. But my transactions, injuries and league news files survived from that era and I just recreated all the player pages with the new computer.

So looking up the information was fairly simple. Let's say I want to find Frank Robinson. I use Pierre's player editor to find Robinson's id number. Then I open the player page for Robinson (which is the id number...ie 5580.htm). I have his season by season stats now available to me and if I see he was traded in 1967 I can open the 1967ltrans.htm to see who he was traded for.
Believe, it is a lot quicker and easier than it sounds once you do it a bit.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot. I sympathize with your computer being a bit on the slow side (mine also) so I appreciate the publicity of your techniques. Better than saving entire seasons files one at a time.

Is it possible to look up a person's career stats after they have retired, without having to go into OOTP? Because I've never done it before.

Yes. If you generate player htm pages each season and keep them you can. As I mentioned before I made a folder on my cpu called player pages and every year I copied the player pages generated at the end of the season to this folder. Each player has a unique player id number so you can let the files overwrite and you will always have the most recent page for every player in your league.

They are listed by number and not the players name so here is a quick way to determine what # page you want when looking for a specific player.
Use Pierre Page's player editor and look up the player (all are listed alphabetically including retired players when you select to open by player). Once you find the player you want with the editor you can read his player id number so you know which htm player page to open.

ie I presently have over 11,000 player pages in my league so if I want to get Ernie Banks' stats I check the player editor and find he is player # 6598 in my league. I go to my player pages folder and open 6598.htm and there are Ernie Banks season by season stats.

Alright, I want to make sure I'm doing everything right, so I'm going to go through what I did for two seasons in the NBL. Alas, I must have done something wrong, for it was the absence of a Pep Aponte player page that led to its demise.

So, here's what I did every season:

1) Saved any important games, such as playoff games, all-star games, record breaking games, and such.

2) Saved the news log, transaction log, and injury log.

3) At the end of the season, before proceeding to the next season, I processed player pages.

I put the box scores and the logs into a folder marked with its year, and the player pages into my own "Player Pages" folder.

Did I do something wrong?

Sounds like you did everything right I am not sure what happened to his player page. But here is a way to recover it even if he is retired. I just stumbled on this a couple of months ago with the HOB.

Get Pierre's Undelete utility from statbased baseball.
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?sportplanet/sbb/files/Undelete10.ZIP

and the updates
http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?sportplanet/sbb/files/Undelete20.zip

http://dl.fileplanet.com/dl/dl.asp?sportplanet/sbb/files/Undelete21.zip

Once you have the program you can unretire and undelete everyone who ever played in your league.

Step 1= Make sure you have backed up your league files and that the game is closed

Step 2 - Open the undelete utility and follow instructions to set the proper path to your league file.

Step 3 - Undelete every player in the file and then unretire every player in the file. When done close the utility and reopen the game.

Step 4 = Run the html reports and include player pages. All previously retired players will now show up in the free agent pool as active so player pages will be generated for them all.

Step 5- Reinstall the original league file you backed up and you are done.

The undelete utility worked great until my league was over 9000 players (around my 75th season) I assume it just got to be too much for the program.

Stat based Baseball among other sites. Here is one link for it.

Ok, when did you backup your league file before undeleting and unretiring?

Yes absolutely. You must backup the league file prior to using the undelete utility otherwise all the players you undeleted will be free agents in your league even though some could 50-60 years old (depending on the number of seasons you have simmed)

I can't tell if you answered my question or not.

I wasn't asking IF I should, I was asking when I should. Should I do it before proceeding to next season or at the beginning of a new season? Or does it even matter when I do it?

I always back up before proceeding to next season since it covers me in case I have a mistake with rookie import or anthing like that.
I thought you were asking with regard to the undelete utility which you should always backup immediately prior to using it.

Alright then.

Thanks for the help.

Actually, wait...if you are using your backup after getting done with the undelete utility, won't the players.dat file still leave out retired players, thus not allowing you to look a person's name up in Pierre's editor?

You backup, then run the undelete utility, then open your game up and create reports (so retired players will be included) then close the game and restore your pre-undelete backed up file, then reopen game and proceed to next season. Does that make sense. Sorry, I didnt get much sleep maybe I am not explaining it that well.

With Pierre's player editor you can look up retired players without having to undelete them. The only thing I used the undelete for was so I could unretire them and create player pages for former players in my league.

BTW, you only need to use the undelete one season since all the retired players will never change once their reports are generated.

I don't know why, but never, in my history of using Pierre's Player Editor, have I ever found retired players.

This time was no different. The undeleting and unretiring went great, but as I went to the Player Editor to see if I could get Roger Clemens ID number, I found that he was no where to be found in the editor.

*sighs*

Are you using the newest version? (4.2.3) Also are you selecting 'Open Player' and not open player by team.

You havent used his player purger to clear out retired players have you? That would cause a problem viewing them. Otherwise, it works fine. I just opened the Mathewson's to get their id numbers with no trouble.

I have the latest version, I looked it up under Open Player, and, there was no Roger Clemens, or any of the retired folks, that I could see.

I have no idea why it isnt working. Maybe try and post a message for Pierre. But every player that ever played in your league should be visible with the editor. Your retired.dat file hasnt been deleted by mistake from the league has it?
