Perfect Team for a newbie?

Hi guys...I've been playing OOTP since the beginning after Front Page Sports' baseball game stopped being produced. The last version I purchased was OOTP19, and while I played that a decent amount during COVID, I moved towards MLB The Show as it was something my son and I could do together.

Anyway- I'm reading about Perfect Team, and I'm wondering; is it something that you need to put a ton of time into in order to enjoy? I really enjoyed the "collection" element of MLB The Show's Diamond Dynasty, but found that I could not spend enough time with it to ever complete, or keep up with, the challenges.

In reading the forum, Perfect Team feels pretty overwhelming, and I get the sense it's something may people spend multiple hours per day on. Just wondering if it's worth it to check it out when OOTP25 is released, or if I should pass on it. I'm probably a 1 hour per day guy, max.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I just saw that I joined these forums in May 2002. Wow, time flies!

You can play PT as passively as you like. Don't even stress about the meta ideal best cards. Make a theme team. You get three teams per game purchase so your son can have one. You make a Red Sox team with only Sox (or whomever your team is) and he makes a team that is only players that did X. Whatever he wants. Or play it straight. Again, you got three teams to work with.

Have fun with it. There are people that are WAY into it and chase the Perfect Team in the Perfect League but man, I'm too old for that. Just collect points and rip 100 packs like you are a kid again pulling Topps cards and tossing the gum. It's as competitive or as passive fun as you wish to make it.

Can you break down the gameplay loop?

ELI5, I can figure out interface stuff, I just want the high level overview.

Anyone who is interested in dipping their toes into the VERY fun world of Perfect Team should come over to the Official OOTP Discord Server. It's where the vast majority of Perfect Team players live and the community is fantastic at walking new players through the nuances of the mode.

It depends a lot on what you find enjoyment in. If you want to compete with the best teams in PT, you will not be able to do that without investing a lot of time and/or money.

If you want to have fun ripping packs and just seeing how well you can do, that's no problem at all. You even get free packs just for logging in regularly.

I'd suggest going on the discord server and looking at theme teams. Theme teams are teams made of cards that adhere to a specific theme, like all players from a specific team, all players from a specific decade, or all players who were teammates with your favorite player.

IMO, theme teams are the best way to get enjoyment out of collecting in PT if you don't want to try to compete.

I've been threatening myself for years to make The Hossenfeffers.

Takes only players that have the letters H-O-S-S or F-E-F-F in that order in their name.

FEFF's are hard.

I had a ton of fun last year just completing sets. As someone said, there are daily rewards just for logging in.

I find tournaments to have been a great addition for people who don't want to spend a ton of time, or who want to play in a long session once in a while rather than spending time each and every day.
The main mode settles out after a couple of months and as long as you are satisfied competing at lower tiers, you can enjoy it with minimal time spent.

Start out with a team based on your starting packs, let a season play out or tweak every day, see how your record fares.

Figure out where your team is weak, or weak relative to what other people are running. Use your free packs to improve when you get a good pull.

You will accumulate perfect points that can be used to buy more packs or in an auction shop to find a specific card or the best card you can afford at a position of weakness.

Striving for promotion and avoiding relegation is the goal. Eventually you will decide if you want to put more real world dollars in, or be satisfied at the level where you settle with the cards you get from buying the base game and playing. There are lots of ways to get cards.

Hey Mattymo,
if you focus on league play, then spending an hour per day wont get you to "compete" in Perfect League, meaning being the best perfect league manager out there in that season, if that is what you mean with "compete".
But really who is.
If that means to win some tournaments, especially in Iron or Bronze or Prefect Draft, yes that can be enough.
I heard from a lot Managers, that they will concentrate more on tournaments this cycle, because it is much more convinient to schedule and no problem if you sit out a week or two.
Also you can do Theme Teams and compete with other theme teams. Meaning you do not (necessarily) chase the most expensive cards and missions, but concentrate on building your team according to a team (Era, fav. team, player, country, really no boundaries here).
What I can advice you is check out Laptophound on youtube under:
https://www.youtube.com/@laptophound for good beginner videos or check out Laptophound or DrDynastic on twitch.
Both welcome new managers with open arms and will answer your questions.
Also their communities are really helpful.
For the theme teams check out EVCinNYC2 on twitch. He founded that community and is also super friendly and helpful in getting you started.
Hope that helps
