I have two middling infielders who I'm trying to use as utility players. I need a b/u SS, so I've been playing both there (Spring Training and minors to develop). Both have similar ratings and experience at the new position (SS) but one has a rating and the other does not. I've included a screen shot of both players ratings and fielding stats. I don't understand why the top player has no rating at SS, despite having similar service time to the bottom player. Neither is particularly strong, defensively, but I'm just looking to have either or both be available to fill in for a game here or there for my starter.
From the Department of Too Much Information. Top player is a prankster and is basically on my team to help morale. He's a pretty good hitter, but not as good as any starter I have at a position he plays. Bottom player is a Rule 5 guy, so I can't send him to the minors (unless he's on injury rehab, which happened earlier this season). I realize neither guy is going to be Omar Vizquel, but seems to me that top guy should have a SS rating by now. His IF range/arm are not great, but fairly close to bottom guy. What gives?
