Can't promote player from AHL to NHL

I am trying to promote a player from my AHL to NHL but I don't see the option available when I right click on the player in question.

Does he have an NHL contract or is he contracted to your AHL team?

OK, the player in question does have a AHL contract. AND, whenever I try to offer him a NHL contract I get a message saying that I do not own the NHL rights to this player.

Is he on loan from another team ?

I can't tell if he is on loan, His bio shows he is contracted to my AHL team. There is a (P) after his name on the roster, what does this mean?

Your farm team in the AHL operates on it´s own (just like in real life), so they sign at least some players on its own (in addition to the players you send down). You can´t promote this players and if you don´t have rights for this players you can´t sign them.
