Another historical save
I have been playing my Orioles historical save, and I am pretty much unsure what's happening in the bullpen. Moe Drabowsky IRL was doing very well, but in my save he is a disaster. His ERA is just attrocious, but the FIP is pretty ok, so the high ERA might be a fielding issue? But again SIERA and BABIP are also out of the scale. Here in the picture above you see real stats, while on the bottom the in game stats. I am not sure if I should drop him off before the trading deadline, or to give him some more chance.

The sample size is too small for the results to be meaningful.

Just curious, is this using 3 year recalc? Moe's 1965 stats weren't all that impressive, so that might be a factor, but I agree with Brad, there's still time for him to turn it around.

Yes, 3-year recalc, so you could be right.

There ya go: Sample size and 3-yr recalc
![]() And re sample size, consider that those stats (6.75 ERA in 30.2 IP) could be nothing more than two really bad outings. IOW, he's not really that far removed from a respectable ERA. I'm reminded of Mike Marshall in 1974 & 1975. He was stellar (won a Cy Young award out of the 'pen) in '74; his ERA that year was 2.42. The following year his ERA was 3.29; not bad, but not nearly as nice as the year before. However, if you take away a single dreadful 1975 outing - 9 earned runs allowed in a 2-inning, early-May stint against the Pirates - his ERA would've been 2.60, which is not significantly higher than his 1974 ERA. |

Again another test, again 3-year recalc, and Warres Spahn has 5.18 ERA and 6-9 record in 17 starts in 1954. IRL he had his best years from 51-53. :-O

Way back when I first started playing OOTP, I had to make myself stop comparing real life season stats with OOTP season stats. I actually wish they would remove the "real stats" line from the player info widget. Unless you're using real lineups, OOTP introduces so many factors into the pot, it's easy for players to slide. Cool thing is, in the end, players usually come pretty darn close to their actual career numbers. Spahn's strikeouts went down some from 1953-57. What does the Braves defense look like in your game? Also, do you have development on as well as recalc? |

Obviously I do not want an exact copy of history in game, it is just a bit frustrating when a "star player" in your team is under-performing.
I am now trying a Cincy Reds historical play from 1963 which was Pete Rose's rookie year. My plan is to keep him on the team and see if he can reach the +4000 hits, plus I also want to keep Frank Robinson on the team, as if the worst trade in MLB history has never happened. Finally, I am planning to bring in Sparky Anderson as manager when he appears in the game. :-) I am curious how this one folds out.

After 35 matches in 1963 we are at the 3rd place with 20-15 record. Both Robinson and Lnych batted 5 homers, so no big numbers so far.
I brought McMahon and Cuellar to Cincy. The Cuban pitcher is the future, while MacMahon is marked as one of the best relievers of the 60s, by various sources. I have 3-year recalc, plus player development on.

I am about to finish the 1963 season with the Reds. A bad August eliminated us from the pennant chase, but hopefully we will still play over .500.
I have just realized that my rotation is probably far from being ideal. The 1963 Reds have 3 lefties in the starting 5. Since majority of the hitters are right handed this is a kind of drawback. I think I need to trade one of those guys for a righty starter.

Just curious if you have any average or below-average real life players that ever perform exceptionally well?

AI sometimes has strange behaviour, the Braves gave me the 24 year old Phil Niekro for the 29 year old Ken Walters. :-) I could hardly believe this.
