Those two should dominate in Iron league. If you want an alternative, try 85 Bill Dickey or 85 Rick Dempsey. Their catcher ability and framing runs will be off the charts. Perfect Josh Gibson or 99 Biz Mackey from the Negro League set are two of the best overall, giving you solid defense and plus bats.

Gibson is a must buy, but don't buy it! You get it by completing NeL 1 and 2 missions. That's the way to go.

Then you will add: Stearnes, Foster, Mendez, Wells, Paige, and Donaldson as well. But, wait, that's not all! You get 2 perfect packs which can be anything from duds to studs.

I've been through 20 catchers. I finally settled on Heavy Johnson who is a RF with Catcher eligibility and Sandy Alomar Jr.

There are some strange catcher-eligibles in the NeL cards

Ray Dandridge
Bill Pierce
Dink Mothell
Heavy Johnson

And those are just the position players with C ratings over 50.

I'm surprised you weren't satisfied with Simmons, he's a heck of a bat and has a decent defense rating. Chris Hoiles is very cheap and hits pretty well in lower level leagues. Endy Rodriguez and Diego Cartaya from the FL set are pretty solid in low level leagues too.
