Templates and updated player ratings
I have a question that might best be answered by the devs but if someone who plays similar to me is certain of the answer, their input would be much appreciated.
I like to play the Standard Game and I usually work through GM'ing most of the 30 teams over the course of a calendar year before the next release. So I like to set up a 'template game' with the exact league settings (all available leagues) roster regulations, financials, etc. that I like. Setting up this template can take three hours, so I don't want to do it over and over again with each new team I want to tackle. So I just make a copy of the template (in which I start unemployed) then in commissioner mode of the new copy take the new team I want to try, then leave commish mode. For the most part, this works fine. However, even if I continually update ootp, which I do, the template's player ratings remain the same as when it was originally created by doing it this way. To my question. Now I've made a 'template' of the template game settings. Keeping in mind that the original 'template game' was set up using version 24.4.61, if I now start a new Custom Game in version 24.6.69, using the 'template' settings will the player ratings be the old ones from version 24.4.61 or will they be the new ones from version 24.6.69. That was painful to write. I'm sure it will be even more painful to read and understand. But if someone 'gets' what I'm asking and can help...much appreciated Last edited by Dave Stieb II; 06-30-2023 at 08:52 PM. |

Let me try this again. Ignore my opening post if you can.
I have a template (league settings, roster rules, financials) etc. that I set up using version 24.4.61. If I start a new Custom Game now, in version 24.6.69, using that template, will the individual player ratings be the more up to date in version 24.6.69 or the old ones from version 24.4.61. I am hoping it is the updated ones. |

I have no idea, but I potentially have the same issue. I would hope the updated/corrected ratings in the newest version are the ones that you will see using the template; but I wonder.

I believe if you save the template during game creation the structure will be saved with no players. If you save the template after game creation, the rosters will import along with the structure (like a quick start). While cut-and-dried for fictional leagues, I understand where there could be confusion with real world rosters. The question would seem to come down to whether the roster files in a template created after game creation include the player data at the time of the template creation or if it gathers the data for the template rosters fresh from the current database every time the template is used to create a new game. Anyway, you probably already are familiar with this following, but just in case:

What Jcard says, plus this:
There are two ways in which players are updated 1) Manual database updates done by OOTP developers 2) Automatic rating updates based on ZIPS projections at a given date If you saved the template before game creation, you should get the database updates when you start a new save. However, if you want player ratings to reflect what is happening in the current season in real life, you need to use the live start option (custom games can use the live start option btw). |

Thanks, guys.
I'm only interested in the developers data base updates with new releases, not live start. I guess the question jcard asks is the key but, ultimately, after seven years of fine tuning templates too many times to count, I've decided to go with what I have regardless. But I did compare the earlier ratings and the new game ratings for a couple teams (Texas and Arizona) and they are definitely not anywhere close to exactly the same. Jonah Heim and Corbin Carroll both have better current ratings for instance. That's good enough for me. Time to play ball! No more 'templating' for a while. |
