Best Record + LARGE Payroll = DISASTER

I've been playing the series since OOTP 2, and there's one thing that I've noticed as nearly consistent.

If you have the best record in your league and/or the highest payroll - WATCH OUT! That's a giant target on your back.

Now, I've played from year 2003 to 2020 so far. My manager (me) is considered a Living Legend. I've made it to the playoffs every year except '05, '10, '14, '20.

I've reached the World Championship in '04, '06, '07, '17.

I've won the World Championship in '04, '06, and '17:

Since I've gone to the WS 13 out of 17 years, and only made the WS 4 out of 17 years (winning 3), I'll break down the salary numbers for those 8 "important" seasons.

So what's my point? Try to keep your salary down, and get that wild card. It may be the best thing to happen to your team. How to do it?

At the end of your season, rather than going out and signing that big name 5/4.5 star pitcher in Free Agency, go with the 3 star guy you've got in AAA. Also, NEVER draft or sign Closers. They command much more money than Middle Relievers. Save money by converting a 3.5/4 star MR to CL and bring a guy up from AAA and sign a MR on the cheap. You'll thank yourself!
