James Ware signs with Lincoln

Ware Oh Ware

May 23rd 2003

Fond du Lac (AP)

With the halfway point of the free agent period in the NLB one of the leagues brightest talents was offerless. The 29 year old third baseman played last season with the St. Paul Saints and he was mired on a team short on talent and even shorter on wins. The Saints had the 2nd worst record in the league last season. Ware became a free agent at the end of the season and he wasnt about to continue his days in the NLB on the losing end. " I want to be on a team with a bright future and where I can make a difference. I am not a baseball savior, so I wasnt going to go to a few of the teams in the shallow end of the talent pool. I wanted to be in a situation where I could do my part and play on a team that was going to compete for that title."

So after half the free agency period was over James sat at home in Quitman Mississippi waiting for the right offer to come along. It was then that Lincoln GM Jay Kaplan picked up the phone and called Ware. "The way I saw it, I had money in the bank, so why not go get the best player left in free agency. He have signed a few big names so far and I think that did just as good as anything else to convice James that we were in the business of winning," said Kaplan. "Well I did sign with them just 3 days after they gave me the offer, but it was perfect. I couldnt ask for a better deal. We all saw Lincoln play last season. With some hitting they could have won the thing but there hitting wasnt there, and thats what they brought me in to do. I hope I can lead this team to where they want to go, and they convinced me that they are committed to getting there," said Ware.

With free agency nearly over the Salt Dogs have added two high powered bats with Maurice Otten and James Ware. Add them to a lineup with Boyce Peets, John Kubisiak, Shawn Given and David LaRochelle and with Asher Jones waiting in the wings the Salt Dogs shouldnt have to worry about hitting anymore.
