I like to start with an expansion draft, but it takes place just a few days before the season begins, not enough time to sign free agents. Is there a simple way to alter that, either with an earlier start date, or by using the existing schedule and pushing the start date back a week or two/

Enabling spring training will give you more time before the season starts.

How do I do that? I see under options, schedule spring training, and i can pick a number of weeks. but, it's not altering the start date.

You previously said the game starts a couple days before he regular season. If you select spring training it starts a couple days before spring training. Changing spring training from no to yes doesn't change the date in an existing game. It needs spring training yes when the game is created.
