How Can I Speed Up A Save?

I thought Clean Up Database was a tool that would help speed up a save but I am not sure anymore.

My EBL vs MLB has been going in its current form since OOTP 13 and is around 20 GB (I gave up looking at properties at 18 GB). When I load it, it slows down my PC considerably. My newer, smaller leagues give me no trouble. I can usually only play 1 game then I need to reboot, especially if I fart around on the forums like I am doing tonight. Took almost 20 seconds for the P to throw the 2nd pitch of the game (it was saved and restarted)

Just seeing if there are tips.

What are the odds you have all been saving all transactions? I have noticed that one gets crazy out of control very quickly now. I tried reducing that to 10 years and it took forever to run.

I started with historical MLB 1999. Added the EBL in 2003, now at 30 teams with 4 levels of minors. Added CBF in 2005. That league closed in 2027. Right now i have 4 ML's EBL, MLB, UBL & IBL. MLB has full minors. UBL has AAA. IBL has 2 levels. I am in 2037 now. One of my recent draft picks ID is 85288.

That's been off since OOTP 17 or 18.

Almanacs? If you had those on at any point they're still stored in [whatever folder they're stored in, sorry I forget]. They are huuuuuge space hogs.

Team photos get saved in there too but unless you create all of them every year it probably doesn't do much.

Nowadays I turn the stats detail level down on any league I'm not playing in, but that won't help for your old seasons.

There's always "delete players that never reach majors" but you may not want to do that. I always chicken out when the "are you sure?" dialog comes up.

OOTP should give out some kind of badge for people that can get a saved game to last that long :P

Sorry, I meant to mention that in my original post. My PC is a bit outdated and not great to begin with but the EBL vs MLB is the only super large league I have and the only one that gives my PC issues.

I did have almanac from OOTP 13-17.Turned that off after the conversion to 18 took 13 hours.(approx, i forgot how long it took but it was over 6 hours)

Does deleting players who never reached majors prevent them from becoming coaches? I like minor league players as coaches. This would save a ton of space though as I know i have a butt load.

My EBL vs MLB dynasty is at 555 pages and 11,096 posts.

Almanac won't slow your game. It only takes up time when you actually build it. Once it's done, it does nothing but sit there. It takes a lot of space as the league history grows, but doesn't interfere with the game running speed. (See below - will have an affect if HD is getting full)

2.41 ghz isn't very fast in this day and age, in fact it's slow.

How much HD space do you have left? If your HD gets too full (yes, the Almanac will come into play there) it will slow things down.

Even without the Almanac, the league file grows quickly as each season passes. There's a ton of data to be recorded and saved. Every single pitch, every single AB, every ball that's fielded, every ball that isn't fielded, every single play you're adding more data to your save.

Almanac's don't need to stay on your HD though, you can burn them to a DVD if you want to.

I'm guessing it's 3 things slowing you down - older slower computer, very large league file, and little HD space left.

Here's a thought.

First of all, make sure there are no almanac folders in the news/html directory of your save. Move them somewhere else because they are huge and you don't want them to ever be backed up.

Backup your save so you can restore it after this test.

Go to League Settings and turn player development completely off and then check if the sim speed improves. This is not something you'd normally do, but it could be that you have so many active players (on teams or as free agents), that simply having the engine develop them could be slowing things down.

If it does speed up, then maybe you should forcibly retire free agents at a certain age. For example, if anyone is completely unemployed in mid-June at age 35, they get retired. If they are over 25, unemployed and have no potential (20 rating), then retire them as well. That would at least take a lot of players out of the player development process.

Then restore your save and resume where you left off.

I'd say that the overall size of the save is taxing your system. You'd probably want to upgrade your ram. With Win 10 or 11... You're gonna want at least 8 Gb. I'd also suggest a ssd hard drive.

HD is at 112 GB of 500 GB. I recently deleted old OOTP files and games and cleared out around 145 GB.

Here's another one. For your saved_games folder, right-click on it and select "Properties" from the menu. Click the "Advanced" button and UNCHECK the box that says "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to properties"

The default for Windows is to index the contents of every file on your system, but you can (and should) turn that off for your OOTP saved_games directory. Each OOTP save creates a ton of files and there's a lot of system indexing occurring in the background that will slow it down..

Plenty of HD space.

Just curious, how many seasons have elapsed in your league?

4GB of RAM is low these days. If your going to have a huge league like that, you might want to beef up your PC

On the topic of HD space, how much is taken up by your jersey and logo requests?

Almanacs have nothing to do with speed.

You'll want to pay attention to your memory. I have a similar large league and when I start looking through my records and history, when all those reports are loading, my memory usage can get over 1GB. If you're only at 4, windows is constantly going to be dumping items from memory, especially if you have other programs open. Typical memory hogs are Chrome tabs and anti-virus. If you have both of those going on, and a league with lots of history, that's why your computer is slowing down.

If upgrading memory is not an option, don't have any other programs running while you're playing. Pay attention to your task manager. Avoid going into the history a whole bunch.

If you're really desparate, you can delete players from the database that had super short careers. This will prevent their player record from loading when you get into history

the EBL vs MLB folder which has all the league files by league and team is 6.23 GB.

I have 154 GB of 438 GB free. I was guessing on the 112 GB and I also worded it wrongly. All of my OOTP files are on my X drive except for OOTP 23 and FHM8.
