Vin Scully has passed away

Vin Scully, legendary broadcaster, dies at 94

(sigh)

Vin Scully's unique narration of a baseball game, and the countless recollections from thousands of baseball games from the past, made me seek out the odd Dodgers home game that I could maybe watch from nine time zones away.

And I hate the Dodgers.

Farewell, Vin. There will never be another one like you...

This is very sad news indeed.

Vin Scully was a true gem from a bygone era. The way he could weave stories into the midst of play-by-play was nothing short of legendary. Truly a giant in the world of baseball and I wholeheartedly agree, we'll likely never see his kind again.

He's one of those people that I would be happy listening to him read the phone book.

Go rest high on that mountain
Son your work on earth is done
Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son
Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered 'round your grave to grieve
Wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing

The last, and possibly the greatest, of the classic broadcasters of my youth. Jack Buck, Ernie Harwell, Harry Kalas, Mel Allen, Harry Caray, and several others all sharing some great stories with Mr. Scully right now. RIP to a legend.

As The Game stated Vin Scully could read the phone book and you'd still enjoy it, only 2 other commentators have done that for me, John Madden and Bill McLaren a rugby guy, sadly all 3 are no longer with us.

By the way was watching Sky Sports News over here this morning, if anything happens American sports wise it's usually a few words at the bottom of the screen, this morning Vin Scully got honoured with a report about his passing, high praise indeed.

I didn't like his voice, didn't like his delivery, and loathed his team. That said, he was knowledgable, well connected, professional, had more facts at his fingertips than 9 out of 10 experts, and never failed to support his team. RIP, Vin...you were a gentleman and a classic of a style I simply didn't get...and a 100% CLASS ACT.

I know these were all intertwined, but he had the very rare combination of an uncommonly early start and very long career (67 years with ONE organization!), unquestioned class and kindness towards his fellow humans, work ethic, humility, and immense talent. As a lifelong Dodger fan who grew up listening to Vinny on the radio, it's like losing a favorite uncle.
