Balks

Is it just me, or are there an inordinate number of balks during game play. I average one balk per game, almost. This does not appear to be MLB normal.

I have not seen that.

But I am getting a number of wild pitches and passed balls and even dropped third strikes, beyond anything I have seen before.

I have played twenty games today and one walk-off by balk and three other runners on third base scoring on balks.

I've never had a problem with balks when I use autocalc. And I always use autocalc.

I don't know what MLB average is, but I'd say I get maybe 1 balk called every other game. So maybe 0.5 balks per game.

That does SEEM high to me, but I don't know the IRL frequency there so I can't say for sure.

Truthfully, balks have always SEEMED high to me for many years of OOTP. It's never been so outrageous that I put in any actual effort to monitor and compare it..... but yeah, IMO they've seemed a little high for a while.

Here is some balk discussion from a couple of weeks ago.
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...43#post4921643

And my reply below where I post some OOTP vs Actual balk stat. I took my 146 balk stat from 2006 for my LT. .

The numbers from my post below tend a little bit low overall averaging 140.6 over those seasons.

Here is a reddit post with a graph of balks 1914-2014.

With the advent of autocalc these numbers have typically been good in my games. Autocalc has my balk LTM at .483 in v23. In v22 it is .493. That is a typical LTM in all versions I have autocalced. I have never seen a balk LTM anywhere near 1.000 using autocalc.

I can't say for sure about the first year or two of autocalc but, for me, autocalc has made the balk numbers always come out reasonably close. Keep in mind balks are a small number so any fluctuation is magnified in the percentages. IOW I normally find +\- 5% stats acceptable. Balks can be a bit farther off and still be ok, IMHO.

I did find one of my old notebooks and here are some numbers I recorded a few versions\years ago.

Expected \ OOTP

146/121
146/213
146/137
146/118
146/114

These numbers are from v16-v18. After this, as noted, I quit writing them all down.

Okay, this is ridiculous, I am playing a World Series and there have been at least seven balks, may be more, but I am clicking until RISP button. Three of those balks have allowed the winning run to score!

What do your league settings totals and modifiers look like? It might be for some reason that the setting there for balks has gotten too high. If so, you can manually adjust it down and then this should sort itself out.

I can't remember a balk in 10 seasons plus. Doesn't mean it didn't happen..but if it didn't that's another thread in and of itself.

Since you're a developer, how do settings get too high? I assume this guy just started a normal game with default settings. Wouldn't that mean all of us that started with default settings would see balks through the roof and have to adjust this setting down? I haven't had a problem with balks.

Do setting just eek there way out of sorts with no intervention from the user?
Just asking so, if you have time, let me know.
