promotion/relegation leagues effect on contracts

I've set up a Pro/Rel league with 5 major leagues (with descending reputation levels). I simmed out like 20 seasons and then took over. After spending about 4 years stuck in the same league I finally got promoted out of the 4th into the 3rd level league.

I'm not sure if it started from when I took over and I just failed to notice it, or if it was related to getting promoted this current offseason, but now several contracts for veterans are on auto renew. I traded for a player who's contract ran out at the end of that season, and in the offseason it was suddenly an auto renewing contract.

He had been in the league for 20 years so it was a shock to me. I'd have never traded for him if I knew his contract was going to eat up around 55% of my payroll the next few years.

I'm not sure what caused this. Has anyone else experienced this in a Pro/Rel league? Or in any other scenario? Can you think of any league (or association) settings that could have resulted in this?

Could it be he's a "foreign" player by some designation and he becomes auto renewing at the end of his current contract in his "current league?"

Edit: Now I see guys in their mid to late 30's having auto renew and arb eligible all over the place.

Looks like your service years are out of whack. I had a pro rel league for years and years and never had that problem. You need to make sure that the service years are not reset if he switches leagues

is there a way to have a pro/rel league with historical players? My guess is yes, but the draft would have to be off and all new payers would come in a FA's ready to be bid on. Thoughts?

How would I do that?

And yeah I'm 99.9% sure that's what happened but I'm confused how to fix it.

Also I read over an older thread about pro/rel financial issues... I'm not sure what they're talking about? I THINK it's fixed, because I have had no revenue or expense issues since I moved up to the 3rd division from the 4th, but I didn't quite understand the issue that poster was describing.

On the league financial pages, there is a checkbox for "reset service time for FA from other leagues" (about 3/4 of the way down the left pane) make sure that isn't checked on any of the leagues otherwise the service time will reset and they will go to auto-renew each time a player switches leagues.

Not related to the fix, but you can release a player who is on auto-renew anytime before the contract renews, which is the date free agency begins, and you won't be on the hook for any future salary.
