Fix the Bench Coach
When an ex player becomes a bench coach that is usually the end of his coaching career.
Rarely do BC get managerial jobs Now, I know historically there have been strictly Bench coach type men...Don Zimmer, Ron Washington come to mind, even if they got a small shot at managing. What I think should happen for coaches is a Manager % determining how likely that person could or would manage For example Don Zimmer would have a 25% Manage rating, meaning he would more than likely get a Bench coach offer (Bench coach based on fielding and running ratings) Ron Washington would get a 40% Manage rating Brad Mills would have a 10% manage rating Mike Scioscia would have a 90% manage rating John McGraw?Connie MAck would have 100% manage Now these are just real life examples and all 6 of these guys might have different ratings occur but for historical players, we should be able to see and edit them via Commissioner mode |

But that statement isn't true. The Cardinals just promoted Ollie Marmol from bench coach to manager. And guys like Alex Cora (Astros), Brandon Hyde (Cubs), Dave Roberts (Padres), Joe Girardi (Yankees), Mark Kotsay (A's), David Bell (Cardinals) and Dave Martinez (Cubs) are just a handful of current managers that were developed for their current role by being bench coaches. There are many, many more.
A bench coach can be a former manager (often supporting an inexperienced manager), a baseball lifer that brings a ton of coaching/playing experience, or a developmental position for an up-and-coming manager. The path to a manager job is not linear and can involve being: * A bench coach (the aforementioned) * A 1B/3B Coach (Dusty Baker, Lovullo, Woodward) * A pitching or hitting coach (Shelton, Bud Black) * A front office role (Service, Counsell, Matheny and Kapler), * A minor league manager (Snitker, Bell) * Or sometimes even being a broadcaster! (remember Larry Dierker?) Many times, managers touch several of these stones on the way up. You even had active players, GMs, and owners get in the mix in yesteryears. |
