The Manfred Man

There he was, just a-standing on the base.

So, MLB and the MLBPA decided to keep the "ghost runner" aka the "Manfred Man" for the 2022 season. I personally think this is a dumb rule and one of the worst rules in professional sports. It would make more sense if they did what they do in Japan and have the game end in a tie after 12 innings. Why not do this during the regular season only and not the postseason? Thoughts?

Dumbest of the Dumbfred changes. And that's saying something. Ghost Runner sounds like a horror movie...and maybe that's appropriate, since, like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers, it just won't stay dead no matter how many times people try to kill it.

Agreed. I personally would get rid of it and have it the way it was, but if MLB is concerned about marathon games why not have the games end in a tie after 12 innings during the regular season? In the postseason, extra inning games will be played as they were pre-2020.

I don't see why ties are a bad idea.

One other idea that I really liked is that when extra innings are reached, then you automatically go back to the top of the order, the entire nine-man lineup gets to bat. However many runs they score is the target score and then the home team gets to try and match it.
If no runs are scored, it is based on the farthest on the base paths you reached.
So if the away team gets a runner to third, and the home team can only get one to first, then the away team wins.

If neither side can even get a runner on first then it's a tie.

I found it to be a pretty compelling idea. Sort of like cricket but much shorter.

I agree 100%. Instead they choose a gimmick.
