Too easy?

I am in like 2060 and lately it just seems way too easy to win in the regular season. I feel like I can win 90 games without trying.

Are there ways you guys adjust settings for the AI to make it more competitive? I’ve seen posts about the AI allowing old declining vets to keep playing premium positions even though they cant hang defensively there and giving more money to teams.

What do you guys do to keep it challenging?

I've never found it easy. I had a Marlins save I played for like 50 seasons and I won one World Series in that time. Most seasons I struggled to reach .500. I never change any settings. It always has seemed more realistic to me.

What are your current settings? Maybe try Challenge Mode?

I have played about 12 seasons between OOTP 21 and 22. I won the W.S. once with the 2032 Brewers. I have never touched a slider.
I play as GM/mgr. and one pitch mode.

Someone please explain Challenge Mode. Thanks.

Challenge Mode differs from the classic OOTP experience in the following ways:

Commissioner mode and the player editor are disabled
League rules and setting adjustments are also disabled
Certain AI team control settings are disabled
Long-term simulation ("Auto-play until...") is only available during the offseason
New in-game achievements can be unlocked while playing games out
Your achievements and season scores will be tracked in your personal OOTP online profile (as long as you're logged in), which will allow you to compare your career and accolades with those of other OOTP players all over the world

Challenge mode requires the creation of an OOTP online profile, which can be done via the bar at the top of the start screen. In order to complete the profile, an authenticator token will be sent to the e-mail address you specify.

So I am really just talking about regular season, not playoffs.

Challenge mode to me is not the solution, it will eliminate my ability to swap and control other teams for a second, which I have been using to try to make the other teams more competitive….for example adding a LF ability to a 35 y/o cf for another team posting zone ratings of -15.

Turn trade difficulty to 10 and increase trading preference for prospects, turn talent change randomness to 200, reduce scouting accuracy to very low, reduce the ratings scale down to 1-5 or don’t use ratings, if your team is financially better off than others than adjust financial settings to even the playing field, don’t use the shop around feature or the “make this work now” feature when trading or limit the amount of times you use it, set a cap for drafting players, don’t acquire players via waiver wire, use a hard cap for IAFAs if you don’t already, I’m sure there’s some other things. In the end the player will always have an advantage over the AI because, well, one is a human and the other is not. I heard that the AI does better when you increase the evaluation settings so they use ratings more too? I’m not sure.

I like the Baconi post.

Here's a good read about making the game harder. Also, try "stats only". I do this in every game now, and it really makes you pay attention to the individual stats of a player. During the draft of course, you won't have stats of the players, so you will have to rely on your scout. Maybe not realistic in the real world, but I do use the "general ratings" only, base stealing, speed, etc., but that's it. And never use stars. So annoying, and the reason why I won't purchase FHM because you can't turn them off. I also limit one trade/season, and only if I feel it's fair for both teams.

Kudos to you by the way, for getting to year 2060. Awesome!

All good ideas, and alot of things I use in some fashion.

Any thoughts to improving AI decision making, other than hand edits and increasing their cash?

Not sure I can help you there. Here's another post on AI evaluation. I always find these posts really interesting, as it helps me to see how others play the game. Keeps the game "fresh" for me personally.

Keep us posted on this. Glad you reached out on this topic.

Great points overall, but I completely disagree with this (the "always" part). If this was true, computers would not be so successful against humans in chess.

Well, true, but chess is one thing and baseball is another. I think we are a LONG ways away from computers managing sports teams as well as they play chess...

When I get to the point where I'm administerring a healthy beatdown to the league, I take over the wost team in the league for the next season, and stay there until they're the ones dishing the beatdown. Wash, rinse, repeat. It's not the end-all be-all, but it helps...a lot. Disable trading, or at least disable trading of draft picks.
