New League Question
I am considering starting a new league.
Conventional wisdom in OOTP is/was to start a league, sim it for 20 years, delete the history and go from there. If I recall it had to do with initially overpowered players setting records that will never be matched. Is there any of that sort of wisdom for FHM? Also, under that scenario, after those 20 years can I throw all the players into a league-wide draft and begin anew? |

If you're trying to get into a league with players you don't know and 0 history, try a custom game. There's an option when starting a custom game if you want to use NHL teams and you can add AHL and CHL teams but make all the players fictional.

Finally getting around to trying this out. I created an NHL league with AHL & CHL, initial draft. I did not select Challenge Mode. First thing that came up after evaluations on stats or ratings was Annual Budget, so far so good.
When I hit continue I got a message that the Canadian JHL did not have a schedule and that I should go to the Structure tab of the League edit screen and select Generate Schedule. For the life of me I cannot find the League Edit screen. I selected the CJHL from the league options and noticed I had the AHL, Quebec HL, a western Canadian HL and the mentioned CJHL. I am fine with these but was surprised I didn't get all of those that I get in a standard game. I can live with these. The minor leagues don't seem nearly as robust as they are in baseball, but neither are the pro football and basketball. |

Commissioner mode has to be on: Manager -> Options -> 'Commissioner Mode' checkbox.
Then select (whichever league needs the schedule) as the active league, click on the league tab up near the top of the interface, and then click 'edit' near the bottom of the drop-down menu. Have fun!

Jumpseat, that was exactly what I needed. Just completed my initial draft. More questions coming.
Thanks |

I completed the initial draft and though I didn't intentionally draft cheap, my payroll is around $40M with a floor of $60M. How do I fill the space to the floor? I suspect it is to contract with some free agents available out there but that is going to take a commitment to players that frankly aren't any good.
On a related question, how do I contract these guys without having them assigned to the NHL team? I don't see that I have a minor league affiliate, and even when I do in my current NHL league I am not sure how to sign guys without having them subjected to the "sign a free agent and they have to stay with your team all year" situation I have heard some complaints about. Splintering off of that question, I see that I can have 90 guys contracted, but where do they go without a minor league affiliate? And like the prior question, how do I sign them without making it an NHL contract? |

You can sign free agents to your heart content and still send them down. If you don't have a Farm league, they'll go to what essentially acts like a Taxi Squad - I think it's just called the Protected list but it's been a bit since I've checked. They'll go down and still get development, but not do much else. So what can you do? Sign a few FAs to big contracts and send them down. It may bury some, but most will be on your cap. You can else EDIT you players and edit their contract status, bumping a few up (and just make sure Recalc when done) to help as well.

Thanks Adam for the distinction, that is exactly what I meant to say.
Next step questions for you guys. To get to the salary floor, I started bumping some of the extra guys I picked up. In that process I just decided to increase the salaries of guys that I expect to use rather tyhan just wasting it on guys I am filling salary with. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me somehow. So when I look at the transaction options for some of the guys I do not intend using, or just won't make the team initially, the only option I have is sending them to the Reserve List. Adam indicated that they will still develop but I wonder if they will generate stats. Ratings get me started but ultimately I put guys out there that perform, so I am hoping they get some stats. In a related question, do these guys end up going down to the AHL somewhere? Ideally they would go to the same team, my affiliate, but I don't have one. In this custom created league can I establish an affiliate relationship? In my NHL league, I am the Kraken as well and they have a relationship with the Charlotte Checkers. I see them in the AHL but I see no indication of any relationship ion the custom game. Thanks for putting up with these probably rudimentary questions but I am new to the game and hockey in general. |
