1905 - 1908 : Pirates Reach The Top
I just got this game last week and I am so addicted. I absolutely love it.
I took the Pirates and started my alternative baseball universe in 1905. I am using real players and drafting rather than putting them on their original teams.
In 1905, the Pirates did well, but never really contended as the Cubs and Giants ran away with the East. The Cubs came out on top and won the World Series in 6 games over Philadelphia. My Pirates came in 3rd finishing with around 82 wins. (154 game schedule)
In 1906, I began to make some minor moves. I brought in Christy Mathewson to john Deacon Phillipe and Charlie Case giving me a pretty potent pitching rotation. This move and a few others helped my Pirates improve and I was contending until the last month when I faded. The Giants won the division and eventually got past the Cleveland Naps for the World Series win in 5 games. Mike Donlin of the Giants exploded with a .385 average, still a record, which led to his MVP in the N.L. My Pirates again finished behind the Cubs and Giants and had around 85 wins.
In 1907, I made some small moves, but nothing major, as I felt the pieces were there. In a memorable end to the season, I entered a 4 game season-ending series against the hated rival New York Giants and MVP Mike Donlin. I was down 2 games going into the series. I dropped the 1st falling 3 behind the Giants. My Pirates then did the unthinkable, winning 3 straight to force a one game playoff. My Buccos then came through with a victory 9-5, sending them to their first World Series. Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers proved to be too much, as my Pirates dropped the Series 4-1. I finished with around 92 wins and Mike Donlin got a 2nd NL MVP.
I decided 1908 I had to find the one big move to get me over the top. I decided that if you can't beat him, trade for him. I sent young superstar pitcher Charlie Case and proven star Ginger Beaumont along with 2 others and picked up 2-time MVP Mike Donlin. Donlin provide my Buccos with the extra punch they needed as the Pirates ran away with the East, finishing with 98 wins. Donlin won his 3rd NL MVP in 4 years and I went on to take care of the Washington Senators in 5 games winning my first World Series!
This game has just been too much fun! I am playing the historical sim on my desktop and just began playing a current 2002 sim (real players) on my laptop. Thank you for all involved in making this game!
