Date contracts 'auto renew'?

What date do contracts 'auto renew'?

If I have a player who's in 1st 3 years of major league contract that I don't plan to carry into the next season by either releasing or trading said player, by when does that need to happen to avoid the contract auto renewing?

I think it's either the first day of the offseason or the day before Free Agency begins.

Pretty sure its the first day of the offseason. It is this when reserve era rules are on. Not sure if using free agency.
