Can You Do This?
I want to create my own league with my own team names.
I only want 8 total teams in my league. I want to put together the players I want on my teams which would include old players like Babe Ruth on the same team as now a day players. I also want one or two of my teams to include players from the Negro League and various different players from the San Diego Padres over the years. Can I do this easily? Do I have to buy extra stuff to be able to do what I want? |

Yes you can do this! It won't necessarily be easy to learn how to import players, but once you do it once it's fairly straightforward. Maybe someone can point you to a good thread on that topic. The custom league stuff though is very easy to set up. Good luck!

Begin on the start screen and walk through the New Custom Game wizard. There are advanced settings but this sounds fairly straight forward. If the wizard doesn't give you an option to have no starting players, just have it fill the teams with fake ones. Once the league is created (the wizard will let you set up the team names, structure, schedule and such) you can release all the players to be free agents and from the free agent menu, click the button in the upper left to select them all - and then delete them all.
Importing players is easier than it sounds. Under free agents, in the upper right, go to import historical player on the drop down. Select historical.database.obd, then enter the player ID (go to baseball-reference.com, look-up the player and grab the end of the website address minus the shtml part - so Tony Gwynn is gwynnto01. Then select the year to import - since you are already on bRef's website, pick a good year Lastly, before importing select the check box for including minor leaguers (you need this for the Negro League players) and I like to toggle on "Keep selected season stats in players careers" so I remember what year I imported them from. They will appear as free agents. Then go to the player editor and halfway down the left side you can select a league from the drop down and a team from the drop down to put them on a team. The only difference for importing the Negro Leaguers is that you need to type the name in baseball-reference, so do "Josh Gibson" and select the Negro League player. He will have a minor league ID (that's why we toggled that on) It is gibson002jos. Choose a year - the database isn't good about stats. Best to import him at the age you want and then go to the same editor page for him, go to the stats on the right hand side and edit the "Resulting Stats" to a real life year or lifetime totals if a single year is too strong. Then click "create current ratings based on stats" and "create potential ratings based on stats" or adjust those inputs as needed to get a good version of him. To see what you created, leave and come back and the stats will normalize. Check defense too. I've imported a lot of Negro Leaguers and you can't just let the database generate them - just too sparse when it comes to records. Seamheads.com is the authoritative record, not baseball reference or the in-game database. I suspect they will improve that now that NEL is a major league. That's the quick overview but many years ago I was you so I will suggest one more place to look and that is the manual. Bottom of the Start Screen. It's a great guide as you go through it and ask questions as you go. We've all been there setting up our first custom game. Lots of help here. Good luck!

thanks for sharing this info, as I had the same question as the author of the post had. In my opinion, you should consider creating a good website for you league and the cool thing about it is that if you will do it nicely and correctly then you will have a good traffic on your website I learned it from https://sitebuilder.reviews/web-design/10-popular-types-of-websites-you-can-create/ and later you can start to monetize your website and make some money. You can also create different type websites not just about your league but about different interesting things.
