Sim, sim, Simma down now!

Thinking of starting a fictional league and having it SIM for a length of time and then hopping in as an expansion team at some point. Would like to have some league history and some years under the belt before I hop in.

Obviously there is no exact answer but curious what people do as far as how long they would normally sim before they jumped in. Do some people jump in day 1 after the league creation and take a team or put some years behind them and then join so there is some history.

My idea is to put this league on an island and concept of being an isolated league from the outside world. I’ve narrowed it down to Madagascar, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Personally I sim at least 100 years. I start a fictional in 1871 and grow it then after at least 100 years I jump in and look for a down team and see what I can do.

For these 2 questions what I do is create My universe and then I sim 5-10 years WIPE all stats but leave all the players. Then I sim 20-30 years before I jump in to give the league some history and have a foundation but also have the league young enough when I join so that there is still a lot of history left to be made.

Now I always have other INT leagues in my Universe so I start off by jumping in a taking over a team in another league for experience before heading to my Main league but having the league on a Island and starting as an expansion team sounds like a good concept.

May I ask why you wipe the first years of stats?

Curious when you do this do you keep the same settings through the years? (Financials, stats, etc)?

There was a time, in much much earlier versions of this game, that many of us believed that it took several seasons for 'normal' settings to kick in. In the first few seasons, there might be a lot of 'unrealistic' stats generated. For that reason, many players would sim between 4-30 years and either wipe stats or just go with a super history.

For what it's worth, I usually sim 30 years and then dive in. I do this for 2 reasons: First, I like having a lot of history for immersion's sake. Second, I really like having all managers and coaches be former players. 30 years is enough time to have all of the original coaches to retire.

There was some evidence in earlier versions, say prior to OOTP19 that the initial group of players were a little strong ratings wise and would put up unbreakable records in the first few years. The prevalent opinion was to sim 5-10 years and then erase history. This helped smooth the ratings.

Edit: Or what Cavebutter said just before me

I like to start from scratch. Helps me remember the history of the league a little better.

I check the update Automatically adjust League Strategy, Import adjusted financial settings after each year and Automatically import historical player-creation modifiers. Then tweak it manually if I see something that is out of whack. Usually sim in blocks of 3 to 5 years depending on when I insert a new league, that way I can check to make sure things do not go to off the rails. Actually in the last few versions I have not had to tweak much of anything and I got a pretty solid feeling universe.

I have always found that at the start of fictional leagues there was to many good players and a lot of bad players so a lot of individual and season records would be made.
So after a bunch of years (5-10) the universe is pretty much In the regular cycle I delete all retired players and wipe stats then start my sim.

This is also a big reason as well especially with the new coaching system if I was starting new Universe.

I take the standard MLB quickstart, disable story lines so the AI can't expand before I'm ready (and it WILL if you don't do this. You have been warned!). Then I sim 10 seasons and stop just before the WS. That enables me to slowly go to the last day of the season so I can expand to Montreal and Vancouver and switch to two 8 team divisions in both leagues with only the top two finishers making the playoffs.

I'll take over one of those, do the expansion draft, Rule 5 and Free agency (mostly International signings) and off to a running start. Need to check the minors for sanity and add a DSL team around the third season.

I ended up starting the Indonesian baseball league. Started a 12 team league with 4 levels of minors and simmed 40 years until 2021. About 20 guys made the hall of fame. 2021... sh&t is about to go cray cray. 8 expansion teams are coming in. Season length will go from 132 to 152. Playoffs will be expanded. Plan is to take over one of the expansion teams and take it from there. Like seeing the history that has been created. The former players becoming coaches. It’s great. Of the 12 original teams there are two teams that never one the whole Schabang. The most winningest team has won 10/40 ... 25 percent. Wowsa!!!
