Is it possible to create the Portland Mavericks?

Watching the fantastic Netflix documentary and wondered if its possible to re-create the Portland Mavericks?

Set up a team from scratch, put them in the Minors.. run them totally independently, financially, players etc and just play it out?

Historically, they show up if you run a game during 1973 and 1977.

In a Modern game, yes, you could make a team called the Portland Mavericks and add them to the High-A Northwest and keep them unaffiliated.

In both of these cases, however, they have no financials and can sign players with reckless abandon (depending on if there are age limits or pro years limits set, default there are none set, so they could feasibly sign a current or historical MLB caliber free agent).

The other option would be to make them a team in an Independent League, then they would be completely unaffiliated, have their own finances (based on the Indy League they're added to).

In all three cases, however, default settings allow for players to be purchased from unaffiliated minor league teams and Independent League teams for a set price. I don't recall how much the default purchase price is for unaffiliated minor league teams, but I believe the default for Independent Leagues is still set at $250,000.

Im also interested in this. So having no financials possibly affects it a bit, but how does the signing of players work?

Is it based on reputation, so really you would just pull from the low class free agents etc? Or would the game not understand and just allow the signing of anyone as there is no money involved?

Couldn't you just move an existing minor league team to Portland and rename them?

Ya know Dorn, I liked you so much better when you were just a ballplayer. If you wanna be an interior decorator now that's none of my business. But some of us still need this team. Now you listen to me! This is my last shot at a winner and for some of the younger guys it could be their only shot. I don't know what happened to you. But if you ever, ever tank another play like you did today, I'm gonna cut your nuts off and stuff em down your f***** throat! - Jake Taylor, Major League

No doubt that'd be cool. I might go check the team out in 73 - 77. That was a awesome documentary
