Pioneer League will decide games with home run derby instead of extra innings in 2021

Very interesting!

This is okay down on the Pioneer League level, bound to be a crowd-pleaser as popular as the t-shirt cannon. But if it ever shows up on the MLB level, I am turning in my viewer membership and retiring to OOTPB-land.

"Based on social media reactions, MLB's extra-inning tiebreaker rule is one of the least popular rule changes in recent memory. Among fans, anyway. MLB and the players seem to like it."

How long can MLB and the players pretend the fans don't matter?

Sadly, I don't hate this any more than the stupid runner on second to start extra innings thing. Gotta wonder if ties would kill 'em at this point, though. I mean, it never killed anybody in Japan.

I don't see how this could be seen as better than the runner on 2nd, but that's just me :P

As long as the fans keep showing up and/or tuning in they'll keep ignoring social media uproars

Not by much, granted. But at least you have to actually earn a home run in a home run derby. Nobody earned that dude on second.

I may have to turn in my old fart card, but the runner on 2nd has not bothered me at all. It is the same for both teams and I like how quickly extra innings games end. Ties wouldn't bother me, but I don't think MLB would go that way.

I think you're the only other person I've seen say they like it

But they still play normal baseball with the guy on 2nd, it just changes things tactically. Tossing up balls for a HR derby isn't normal baseball at all

I thought it would bother me when they proposed it, but I find that it immediately ramps up the excitement. Late innings with a runner on base is always more interesting that with the bases empty.

It won't upset me if they eliminate it, but my expectation of enjoying some righteous anger about it failed to appear.

To me it feels like a college football overtime game, like a set-piece tiebreaker with strategy

For the Pioneer League, this is a good idea that fans will like. Most Minor League games have post-game fireworks displays that fans hang around for. So why not use the fireworks during the HR derby? Shooting off the rest of the fireworks when a home team player ends the game with a winning HR is a literal sure-fire hit.

Since winning the games does not matter, why not end them in a way that has the little kids of all ages hopping up and down and wanting to come back for more?
