Pitching Measurements
As s[portsgamers, we are very fond of comparing modern and historical players. And Lord knows there's a lot of history in baseball. We know we have breakthrough players in modern times, and that measures like 300 wins and 4000 strikeouts have a certain romance to them.
But the game has changed so radically over the last decade and a half that measures like Win-Loss and ERA seem to no longer cut it. More and more teams are adopting part-time openers as a way to start games who by the definition of W-L are never eligible to take a Win home. Strikeout numbers are inflating in an era of players swinging for the fences on a consistent bases. And ERA is as much a measure of team defense as f pitching performance (and has become inflated in an era where one bad outing can blow the ERA apart for guys who pitch one or two innings at most. with managers trying all kinds of new ways to win games at all costs, pitching has become more difficult to rate and the old measures just don't seem to cut t. But then, how do we measure pitchers more accurately, and how do we transfer these measures to past eras with the information we have available? |

WHIP hasn't changed, neither has K/BB. You can measure FIP against historical players as well.
