NHL returns to ESPN
I think this is a very big and good move both for the NHL and hockey fans.
I feel like NBC did a terrible job with promoting the league, even playoff games you had to go find on NBCSN or Outdoor life network or whatever the hell else network that only 5% of cable suscribers had. They would also show games in the afternoon on weekdays and Sundays. This is only one half of the broadcast deal. The other half could be interesting, it has been widely known that the streaming companies want in on sports both for live rights and digital libraries. Those companies thrive on content and sports offers thousands of hours of content in the form of games, specials, pre game and post game shows. And with so many players in the field, the NHL could have it's pick of high paying contract offers. Amazon, Netflix, Disney, Paramount, Hulu and about a dozen others could be in play. I mean, look the deal that the WWE just got from Peacock (NBC/Universal) $1 Billion USD and that is for already existing content. As a hockey fan who fondly remembers hockey night in America on ESPN, I hope this helps out the league. Some more details are here https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...roadcast-deal/ |

If Amazon Prime started streaming hockey games I'd start watching. I have basically sworn off TV at this point as we only have Prime, Disney+, and MLB.TV

Welcome to the Happiest Monopoly on Earth.
I know with ESPN+ they can cram all sorts of things onto their service, although they still seem to be limited in their ability to sell ads on streaming events and shows. The question is where they will find room for everything they carry. I'm especially concerned about them taking over NHL.TV. Will, they still charge premiums in addition to what is paid for the service, much as people still have to buy UFC Par-Per0View cards with "free" fights on alternating weeks. |
