2 Chances! I offer Dennis Stark 900 thousand over 2 years. He wanted 910. He decline. I then gave him what he asked for and he said he was tired of negotiating with me already. I offer 10 thousand less and he blows a gasket. This is ridiculous. Some contract negotiations go through months of give and take. I get 2 chances. Somthing needs to be done. I'm not paying him over a million dollars. I thought I was being nice even offering him a contract considering his sub-par numbers.

He probably thought your were being just as ridiculous in not coming up with a measly 10 grand more

The knife cuts both ways. Should have given him the extra 10 if you thought he was worth it.

I just played 2 games and was going to trade him away and noticed he wanted less. I signed him for 2 years at 860 thousand. I guess he likes me, he didn't want to leave after all. He was bluffing all along.

Glad to hear that he gave in. I must admit that this aspect of the game is challenging. I realize in the "real world" agents and g.m.'s would at least have an idea where to begin, with OOTP5 you just hope for the best. I guess the flip side to this is that it does minimize the chance to take advantage of the system for those who would be inclined to do so.

look up players with similar ratings (at the same position) in the league setup, and look for one who was signed recently, and that should give you a base.

gotta agree with sweed, stop trying to be a cheapass for $10,000 dollars and offer him the salary he wanted from the beginning

Depending on my save game that I am playing, I have one where I am a skinflint, and hate to pay anyone what they are worth.

Another one I pay big and lots for sub-par performances, then trade away the big star, in another. (Washington Redskins, anyone?)

What do you guys find a happy medium at?

I used to have the same mindframe, seeing a player I wanted to hold onto asking for a number and offering less. I don't know why, I guess it's just the thought that when people ask for an amount (like in an online auction or selling a car) they generally ask for more than they think they can get. Giving them that amount is "giving in."

Then, after watching too many people walk on me, I decided that if they were nice enough to give me a number, I signed them.

I find it best to offer lower than they want on the first try (but not too low) and if they decline I go a little over what they asked for orignally. I have found that a lot of times they will take the lower amount and I have yet to get someone pissed at me. But really you only have 1 shot to go lower and then you have meet or surpass their request or they get upset.
