Something I’ve never seen before (I think)
My closer (top 10 guy)
Declined a 12 million dollar option and resigned days later taking a 3/3 million per year deal He ends up losing 9 million this year and I get him at a serious discount for 2 more years to boot I probably could’ve got him cheaper but didn’t want to anger him so I accepted his offer with no arguments I can honestly say in over 20 years of OOTP I don’t think I’ve seen that before. At least not to that degree Not complaining lol....just curious. Anyone else get a nice surprise like that

When my my live start 2020 league moved on to 2021, J.D. Martinez opted out of his contract worth $20m+ per year, went unsigned during the offseason, then signed midseason on a 1-year deal worth about $1m

I've had similar things occur several times. Put one of the incidents on the bugs board.

It's not a "bug". Just weak contract AI which is very difficult to get right given the vast differences in league financials/other settings which impact it.
Also not entirely without real precedent though. Moustakas turned down an 18M qualifying offer just to sign for 5.5M before the season. |

Figure that any player who bet on themselves in a contract year in 2019 (in any of the major sports) to have a great year entering free agency, has now likely lost serious money through no fault of their own. Most of the time we don't have events like we have now (obviously) but they have to leave the room in the code for a player and his agent to make a poor financial decision -- just like they have to leave room for a player to absolutely fleece a team. The player in question thought their was a market for his services in free agency, and there wasn't... if it's an isolated incident, I'd say it is actually "well played" to the Dev Team.

I think I mighta figured part of it out.
When the year changed from 2027 to 2028 he went from top 10 closer to 24th best closer.
