Since you're "newer" I'm assuming you don't have an earlier version of the game. In that case your save is corrupt and hopefully you've backed up your save recently. If you haven't you can possibly upload your save to the ftp site and maybe they can revive it.

OOTP 21 is the newest version. Looks like you have it. I was assuming you weren't trying to open a save from an earlier version.

That's not the problem. What you want to do is go to your saved game file directory and select your league. Go to auto-save and select everything in it and copy it. Then go back to your main league folder page and select all of your .dat files and delete them. Then paste the files that you cut in the main league folder page.
I hope you understood me there, I'll look for a better post that explains it more but for now there's my explanation. EDIT: Here is a better post; my description was off of the top of my head: 1) Open the game and on the start screen, click on Settings. 2) Now click on the tab "Troubleshooting". 3) Click "Open folder containing saved games". 4) Now open up the league folder you're wanting to restore. 5) Then select all of the .dat files in the folder and back them up (just in case) by copying them to a temporary folder or creating a zipped file with them 6) Open the folder called "auto-save". 7) In there, select all of the ".dat" files and copy them to the league folder (the parent of the current folder) overwriting all of the ".dat" files in the league folder. 8) Now start the game and load your league.

Yeah, the above post should fix this.
What's happening is that the league file is corrupt, that's why you get the error. Doing the above will restore from the most recent autosave. You may lose a bit of progress depending on when the last autosave was made, but it should at least allow you to continue.
