Rockies Offseason Summary AND Preseason REPORT

In spite of shoring up some weaknesses in the offseason and continuing to strengthen an already solid lineup Rauncy Byrne's Rockies still are not getting any love from the oddsmakers. According to MLB preseason predictions the Rockies should finish well below .500 and 4th in the NL West. Byrne, in his 4th season as GM/Manager of the Denver-based franchise, is looking to get the Rockies their first playoff appereance and winning season since 2018.

The Rockies primarily strenghtend through the trade market this offseason, adding depth, quality, and youth. The addition of 2xAll-Star and 2023 Silver Slugger Jorge Polanco at 2B to partner with Willy Adames at SS added both high quality defense up the center of the diamond and a strong switch hitting bat. Sixto Sanchez gives the Rockies a potential ace at the front of the rotation with the departure of German Marquez who's last year option was not picked up by the club after a 3rd dissapointing season in a row. Though he has not hit his ceiling, Sanchez has been consistent, leading the league in GS 3 straight seasons with 34.

Brailyn Marquez looks to be a strong pickup in the deal that sent Kike Hernandez back to the Cubs, after a spring that saw him give up 0 earned runs while striking out 16 over 13 innings pitched. It gives the Rockies another lefty arm in a young and deepening bullpen that already has back end talent in 2021 & 2022 NL Reliever of the Year Edwin Diaz and 2023 Rookie Jing-shuan Dai, who won the award in 2023 primarily as a setup man for the Rockies. Dai returns in '24 after the Rockies picked up his $9M club option, while Diaz has 2 years remaining plus a player option on his $38M+ deal.

Minor League signing CF Carlos Tocci breaks camp with the club hoping to add depth, defensive solidity, and a right-handed contact bat to a strong returning outfield which includes second year Rockies 2020 and 2021 first round picks Sal Frelick and Zac Veen. Both had strong rookie campaigns in 2023 combing for 4.8 WAR over 207 games and 908 PAs. They will be joined on opening day by the two previous ROTY winners 3B Ryan Vilade - who slashed .298/.368/.475 (110 OPS+) over 137 games and 569 PAs - and 3B Colton Welker who took the honor in 2022. Welker struggled in 2023 spending time between Albuquerque and Colorado but seemed to find his power stroke again with 4 HRs this spring in 40 PAs.

The big question mark in 2024 is will the Rockies be able to turn around another season of poor defense and pitching? With the addition of Sanchez, 2023 mid-season acquisition Clarke Schmidt - 3.48 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 11 starts over 67 ⅓ innings in 2023 with Rockies - the continued development of Brendan McKay coming into his third full season as a Rockie, and hopeful re-emergance of Marcus Stroman who over 5 starts and 20 ⅔ innings in the spring sported a 1.31 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 3.01 FIP Byrne & company see this part of the team as a growing strength. Tocci and Polanco, along with late spring minor league FA signing SS Adeiny Hechavarria should help shore up the center of the diamond defense. Hechavarria could see time in the major leagues rather quickly with the early season absence of Adames, out for 4 weeks with an oblique strain. Rookie and 2021 2nd round pick Jarret Ford will look to win an everyday spot to start the season playing 2B alongside Polanco at short.

The addition of Polanco, the continued development of their young bats - including rookie and 2022 1st round pick 1B/DH John Dyer - and the steady presence of 2023 NL All-Star and 2022 Silver Slugger 1B Luke Voit should continue to make this team - 1st in the NL in slugging, and 2nd in runs scored and home runs in 2023 - a very dangerous offense. Rockies fans will most certainly be entertained.

WEEK ONE

After a heart-breaking walk-off loss in game one on April 1 in San Francisco, the Rockies bounced back to win 3 of 4 games against the Giants, despite each of their first 3 starters not making it past the 4th inning after being pulled with injuries. Opening Day starter Sixto Sanchez was the only one of those three that will miss any significant time and none were placed on the IL.

Rookie 2B Jarrett Ford hit a grand slam in the rubber match Thursday against the Giants and Clarke Schmidt went 7 strong innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits to give the bullpen a bit of a break after 3 consecutive short outings from Rockies starters, as the Rockies won 6-2.

The Rockies completed the week with 2 wins in Dodger Stadium to make it 5 wins in-a-row. They would top the Power Rankings on Monday despite losing the final game in LA Monday night 13-9. They finished the opening 2 series on the road 5-2 against 2 division rivals.

Through Monday, April 8
Rockies Record: 5-2
1st Place NL West

On the back of a series split with the Nationals, that included the team's first shutout of the season - a 13-0 blowout Wednesday night, the Rockies swept the Reds in Cincinnati to improve their away record to 10-4. A vast improvement over the team's abysmal road mark in the previous three seasons. Justus Shefflied went 7 ⅔ innings, with no walks while striking out 7 in his combined shutout over the Nats with rookieRyan Feltner. Rookie 1B/DH John Dyer was hot in Cincinnati going 5-for-11 with a double, 3 HRs, scoring 6 and driving in 4.

WP: Soroka (3-2), LP: Stroman (2-3), POG: Soroka (ATL) 9 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 7 Ks

The Rockies continued to struggle at home losing 3 of 4 in their Monday-Thursday series with the Dodgers, but bounced back in the weekend series in their 3 game with Atlanta at Truist Park.

A number of the Rockies key contributors at the plate in 2023 continue to stuggle this season, however Travis Blankenhorn did pick a Player of the Game honor for his 2 HRs in the Wednesay win versus the Dodgers. Luke Voit has seen playing time cut as he has struggled with a meager 62 WRc+ and -0.2 WAR. In 7 games since returning to the team April 28 Willy Adames has gone 2-for-26. The veteran bats will need to turn it around, espcially at home, if the Rockies are to stay in the race for the West.

Through Monday, May 6
Rockies Record: 18-13 (.580)
T-2nd NL West, 1 GB

WP: Diaz (2-2), LP: I. Anderson (0-6), POG: Sanchez (COL) 6 ⅓ innings, 0 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks

The Rockies week was a wild up and down ride that begun with two straight losses in New York - to stretch to their longest losing streak of the season at 3 games - and finished with a walk-off pinch hit 2 out 2-run homer by Carlos Tocci in a split series at home with the Braves.

Another highlight of the week was the 1-0 win over the Mets in the final game of the series. Justus Sheffield, Jing-shuan Dai, and Edwin Diaz combined for a 2 hit shutout with 18 strikeouts. An 11-3 win in game two of the 4-game set with the Braves started with a first inning grand slam off the bat of platoon outfielder Anthony Santander, and gave the Rockies their 4th slam of the season, helped to secure a series split in the end.

Through May 13
Rockies Record: 21-17 (.553)

The Rockies returned to winning ways with series wins at home vs Washington and in Arizona. Nothing rivaled Wednesday night's drama as 8th inning sub Travis Blankenhorn walked it off with a 16th inning 2-out grand slam at Coors. The Rockies had allowed 2 runs in the top half of the 7th extra frame, but Blankenhorn rescued the win 8-6.

Another late substitue appearance sealed a comeback win in Arizona Friday when Tucker Barhardt took a pinch-hit walk with the bases loaded and 2 outs and pushed the go ahead run across in the top of the 9th of their 2-1 win.

Gabriel Moreno was named NL Player of the Week of May 13-19 going 11-for-17 in 5 games with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He raised his split line from .253/.304/.463 to .312/.369/.562.

What started out as a great week for the Rockies quickly descended into their worst losing streak of the season as they dropped 3 straight in LA to the Dodgers and at Coors against the Padres. They hit their high water mark moving to 28-19 and 9 games above .500 and within 1 ½ games of the Dodgers atop the West with an 8-5 win Wednesday night. Second year man and reigning ROTY Ryan Vilade had a run scoring triple in the first and a two-run double in the third to help give the Rockies an early lead they would not relinquish. Edwin Diaz continued his scoreless May with his 9th inning in relief without giving up an earned run and picked up his 11 save to closeout the victory.

Returning to Denver the Rockies pitching did not fair as well as they collapsed for 18 runs and 32 hits over the 2-game series with the Padres. The set saw the Rockies drop to 8-12 at home on the year.

Through May 26
Rockies Record: 28-22 (.560)
3rd NL West, 4 GB

The Rockies stretched their longest losing streak of the season to five dropping their first two in a four game set at home to the Brewers. The Monday night loss was particularly stinging as the Rockies relinquished a 6-run lead in the 7th inning. However, they bounced back with 27 runs in the final two games of the series to take the split and used that momentum to win 2 out of 3 vs the Mets over the weekend.

Jorge Polanco's week was particularly impressive as he earned NL Player of the Week honors thanks to 4 HRs and 12 RBIs. He tops the NL in All-Star votes and looks in-line to win his second consecutive Silver Slugger Award. He's more than on-pace to surpass his career best home run mark of 22 set in 2019 with 12 through 57 games.

Through June 2
Rockies Record: 32-25 (.561)
3rd AL West, 4 GB
