Laura Laura Laura
Glad i was able to squeeze a few games in yesterday before leaving for work, as we are without power now and not sure when it's going to come back on. Got to thinking about it, due to the virus we haven't went out of town even once, so yesterday might very well have been the first time since 21 came out that I didn't play at least one game after getting home from work. Going to be a long weekend if our electric company doesn't come through. My other hobby is reading crime fiction, so electricity bound as well. Ugh!

Hang in there David and be careful.
No electricity for an extended time is miserable. I experienced it after Irma. |

Hope you get power back soon--if not already.
My wife and I actually read by candle light in 2011 when hurricane Irene came through.

We played cards by candlelight during Irma. Power went out 2 - 3 hours before the worst of Irma arrived.

David, our prayers are with you and all of the folks in Southwest Louisiana... the Lake Charles-Sulphur-Cameron area.
I live in Louisiana and have gone through storms since Betsy in '63... I've been evacuating since then... ain't no way EC will ride out a hurricane... I always leave town and come back when it is safe... it wasn't bad in Baton Rouge this time around... I got to stay home. I have a good friend in Sulphur... haven't been able to reach him yet... worried about him... he's not the type to evacuate, like I do. Laura was a mighty bad lady... thank goodness the storm surge wasn't 15 to 20 feet like they were forecasting... still the damage is devastating... really, really bad. Well....living in the Buffalo area we have had some BAAAAADDDDD winter storms. Fortunately , when a storm is predicted, we hunker down in our homes. Can't imagine having to leave home.
It's also good to know that when the storm is over and the snow melts, our homes are still standing. Best wishes to all those who felt the wrath of Laura. |

All of us in Louisiana has had to deal with one at some point so I feel for you, David. I'm right outside of Baton Rouge, and we were fortunate.
But my wife has family in Lake Charles and her grandmother was relocated from her nursing home to Ville Platte. And McNeese, where my wife went to college, was beaten up pretty badly. Stay safe, David. |

Hope I didn't come off as a uncaring fool with my post to start this thread. I was going for humor by whining about not being able to play OOTP. Then over the weekend, I realized I may have come off as the complete thoughtless tool. We are still without power, but as I read more and more about the destruction, I realize we are really fortunate.

I got some good info from your thread about the effects of Laura, which was a terrible storm... one of the worst in our history. I went through Betsy in 1963, which was an inconvenient storm... my neighborhood was flooded for two weeks with a couple of feet of water with no power... and Katrina, which was tragic and devastating... really thankful Laura didn't come to Baton Rouge... it would have really been bad for all of us. I wish Lake Charles had been spared, too. Most importantly, your thread got us to thinking about the people in the Lake Charles area and got us to praying for them. We need to help them now... make a donation to an organization that you know will use the money wisely and use it to directly benefit those in need. God works in mysterious ways.
I saw my wife was making a donation on line... I just knew it would be for an organization that I didn't think deserves public support... boy, was I surprised and embarrassed to find - it was one of my favorite charities - the Salvation Army. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I had not told her of my suggestion in this thread for us to donate to a charity to help Louisiana and Texas storm victims. David Watts: your thread has done another good deed. Thank you for posting this thread. Last edited by Eugene Church; 09-02-2020 at 11:51 AM. |

Good thing that you posted indeed, I meant to make a donation and forgot to follow up.
Will do so right now.
