why isn't there fielding potential or SB potential?
why isn't there fielding potential or stealing potential?
If you have speed you have stealing potential and likely range potential. |

Fielding ratings are a function of Range, Error proneness, arm strength, and for middle infielders, skill at turning double plays. Of these, Range seems to be the most fluid and will change over the course of a players career. In my experience, it seems to loosely correlate with speed rating. If a player's speed rating drops, it's a good bet his range rating will drop also (but not always). Players will lose speed and range as they age or if they put on weight.
The other factor in fielding ratings is experience at a given position. The more a player plays a position, the better he'll be at it. There does exist a maximum potential for a player at any position based on these factors. For example, assume a 1-100 ratings scale. An outfielder with an Outfield Range Rating of 50 could potentially max out in the 60's as a left or right fielder, but would make a poor Center Fielder, likely maxing out somewhere in the 30's or 40's. Hope this helps.

There should be
Even if that speed and defensive potential is lower than the player's current rating. This is likely the case for many players as their speed and athleticism decreases from an earlier age than their other skills. |
