40-man roster and the 60-Day IL

Admittedly, I'm messing around a bit by generating Covid injuries and manually giving players 61-day "virus" injuries while I roll some dice in excel to see how long before they return. I do this after games are played for the day and let the AI make their roster moves as the game moves to the next day.

In this case, Houston places Yuli Gurriel on the 10-day IL (despite having a 61-day injury) and designates a (good) minor league pitcher for assignment when purchasing the contract of his replacement, rather than putting him on the 60-day IL and removing him from the 40-man roster.

I've also noticed that the (for other teams, not my own) will add the guys on their 60-day IL back to the 40-man roster if I place them on the 60-day IL myself. It seems like they will remove them from the 40-man when they need space in some cases but I find this curious.
