Who would you take with the #1 pick?

With the CBBL now with a good number of years under behind it (2002-2026), there are about 20 members of the Hall of Fame. So I wanted to know... of the greatest players the league has had, who would YOU take with the number one pick in an initial draft. Assume that all the players are at the point where they are just about to break into the majors.

Pitchers

Jose Maziarz
304 W / 125 L / 2.40 ERA / 4139 IP / 2860 HA / 1175 BB / 2842 K

Matthew Candelario
249 W / 139 L / 2.61 ERA / 3672 IP / 3187 HA / 603 BB / 2449 K

Milo Lizarraga
231 W / 121 L / 2.88 ERA / 3497 IP / 2489 HA / 867 BB / 3317 K

Batters

Harry Berry- OF
.295 avg. / 3035 H / 645 HR / 2020 RBI / 1946 R / 1127 BB / 446 SB / .364 OBP

Leonard Garman- OF
.362 avg. / 3359 H / 596 HR / 1866 RBI / 1976 R / 1299 BB / 50 SB / .440 OBP

Francisco Tammaro- SS / OF
.369 avg. / 3024 H / 332 HR / 1150 RBI / 1575 R / 852 BB / 207 SB / .428 OBP

Rafael Diaz- 3B
.280 avg. / 2654 H / 674 HR / 1708 RBI / 1728 R / 1496 BB / 38 SB / .377 OBP

Raymond Reese- C
.296 avg. / 3013 H / 546 HR / 1566 RBI / 1591 R / 1115 BB / 44 SB / .365 OBP

Dale Velazquez- 2B
.315 avg. / 2546 H / 429 HR / 1372 RBI / 1337 R / 666 BB / 24 SB / .367 OBP

Antonio Spada- 1B
.327 avg. / 3794 H / 620 HR / 2087 RBI / 1891 R / 893 BB / 41 SB / .375 OBP

Oh yeah, here is a link to the league's Hall of Fame page where all of these players except for Francisco Tammaro and Antonio Spada can be found. Those two are busy finishing up their careers in the minors, since they are at the point where their ratings are next to nothing.

CBBL Hall of Fame

And here is Tammaro's page:

Francisco Tammaro

And Spada's page:

Antonio Spada

As good as Garman and Spada look, I would go with a pitcher and the best pitcher is Jose Maziarz.

I really like the pitcher...304 wins vs. 125 losses is excellent.

Divide the values by 18 years, and you get an average record of:

17-7.

Garman looks pretty awesome too. A number 3 hitter for a long, long time.

I would go with the Everyday player, Spada. With Maziarz a very close second.

All 3 pitchers listed did lead their teams to championships. Maziarz had the most, with his team winning 7 during his career. I think one of those came when he was a rookie and not yet a powerhouse, and the last came towards the end of his career when his skills were dropping. Nonetheless, 5 championships where he was the #1 starter. Candelario and Lizarraga each also have multiple rings.

Most of those batters also won championships and were crucial members of their respective championship teams.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm really enjoying seeing what people not involved in the league have to say about its players.

Without a doubt

You've got to pick Jose Maziarz. With a pitcher like that, all you need is 2 more decent pitchers and an average group of batters and you could win the World Series! Batters are great, but if someone like Barry doesn't have anyone getting on in front of him, his RBI's suffer. And one guy hitting a bunch of homeruns doesn't matter if the pitching on his team is bad. Bar none, if you want a single player to make a difference, make it a pitcher!

If Tamaro or Reese are good defensive players I'd take them. Hard to get that kind of offensive production out of SS/C, even now.

I am pretty sure Tammaro was a C at both shortstop and leftfield when he was in his prime. Reese I am not sure about, but in his last player report (from when he was 40), his range at catcher was a B, and his arm rating a D. I'm not sure if they were different when he was younger, and unfortunately I don't have access to my computer that has all the old league reports right now.

Yo

You have to take Maz just because he brings the pain with every pitch...He lead Boston to how many titles, versus only one that Garman helped Chicago earn. Booya!

I would pick Garman, no question. His OBP and power make him easily the best batting choice.

If I had to pick a pitcher, I might go with Candelario because of his walk rate, although Lizarraga is a better strikeout pitcher.
