live start question

Running the live start and in-between updating, my stupid GM goes and trades my #1 prospect for an over the hill player and throws in one of my young relief pitchers to boot. When I run the update, will the update reverse that stupid move as the rosters are updated in real world? This trade would never even be considered it's so stupid. I real life the GM might get fired for this. When you play live start, shouldn't the trades be shut off?

That's not the point of the live start. The Live start is just that. a live start, to give you a realistic updated starting point.

Once you start playing or simming days, it's just another OOTP universe. Obviously, if you want to, you could turn off trades. But then no one would ever get traded in your league.

I understand. But when you do an update say a week later, doesn't it reset with the correct roster at that time? Or am I getting something wrong? I'm under the impression that the update puts players on IL if they get hurt for real or activates them and puts them where they really are. So if player x is still really on my team, shouldn't he still be there as he never was traded anyway. I'm just confused like I am with a lot of this.

When there are rl transations, trades etc, they don't change in your current game in the Live start. They just change for any new Live start game you create.

What you can change in your already created Live start game is to have the game recalculate the ratings based on player's performance in the real season. There's a button for that in the settings.

But player movement etc. the game just takes over for that once you start playing/simming, like in any other regular OOTP game.

Pretty new to the game. So is there an option to turn off AI trades and have all real-life transactions occur in the sim?

Nope. Unless Matt put something in I'm not aware of, which is always possible I guess

Thing is, typically people like to play ahead of the pace of real life, not just play one in-game day each real day. So you'd very quickly get to a point where this doesn't make sense, like if you're in late September in-game (never mind next year), past the trading deadline and the game is updating a new transaction that happened in-game in early August.

EDIT: And if you're playing that slowly and wanted rl transactions, it would probably just make sense to turn off transactions in-game and manually update the rl ones yourself. Would only take 5 minutes a day most days.

Thank you! I just wanted to sim the 2020 season in real-time with complete up to date roosters.

Thanks Lucas, you straightened me out on this. It's only for when you "start" a game. You can update the players ratings as to how they are doing in real life, but not the roster changes unless someone is injured I take it.

That would be great if in the future real life roster updates could be done. Then you could turn off all trades and let the live update handle those. Thanks.

How do you troubleshoot Live Start? I created a new game and after everything was set up I received an error message saying that it couldn't connect and to check my networking connection. The connection is fine and I'm able to play Perfect Team.

If you turn the trace mode on (settings button on the entry screen, go to the troubleshooting tab), then the ootp_trace.txt file will contain some details about the setup.

If you have troubles, I would highly recommend deleting the temp folder related to the live start (it's in your data/live_start path, there's buttons in the game setup page to open or clear that too if you have an open game). It looks like in a few cases we're not re-downloading files correctly so that can cause issues for some people.

In that file, it should go through all the various steps of the live start, so there should be a bunch of lines tagged with "LIVE START", which tell you which steps pass or fail. If everything is failing, then it's either a network thing or your game isn't able to write to the local folder. If only some steps are failing, that might be something else.

Interesting. I literally have no reference to LIVE START in the file at all.

Hmm, do you see either of these lines:
Failed to download player IDs
Player IDs updated successfully.

Those are the first 2 lines related to the live start. If you don't see either, then it never made it to that section.

Although looking, I see we still had a check for challenge mode in there, so if you tried to start a challenge mode game, then I think that would fail and cause the above error. We'll fix that going forward - I believe we did intend to open up live start for challenge mode.

Those strings are not in the file, but I do have Challenge Mode turned on. In retrospect I should have mentioned that earlier

Seems to be working now - it's been downloading XML files SLOOOOWLY for the past half-hour. It wasn't doing that before.

Thank you!

I also had Challenge Mode active, I'll try another start keeping that inactive.

Yeah, it looks like challenge mode won't work with the live start. We'll have a lot of updates for the live start coming in the next hotfix/patch early next week

It worked turning off the Challenge Mode, Matt -- thanks!
