Avatar trouble

A few days ago I noticed that the avatar beside my posts had changed into a ?, indicating a problem of some kind. I've tried changing my avatar file in my profile, but even though I'm trying to use a very small file (8 kb), it does not seem to be accepted. What might be going wrong here?

My avatar has also gone missing and replaced by the below. I see several other people also have missing avatars.

Played with settings in User CP. It appears that turning "invisible mode" on and then off a couple of times seems to have fixed the problem.
